WCU gets its first SoCon win today, 76-69 over Samford in Cullowhee. ETSU big over Chatty 52-34 at halftime in Johnson City. And The Citadel leads Furman 46-43 at the half. Speaking of Furman, here’s an old clip for your enjoyment. I’d wager the man getting ejected was one of the loudmouths from their message board. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=V2FJwEKtfRY&t=10s

Furman has opened up a 15 point lead over The Citadel at 90-75 with less than five minutes to go...I knew Citadel wouldn’t hold their lead. Again, defense is just a rumor in Chucktown, or just somthing to hold the horses in -and until they learn to play some I will never take them seriously as a true conference contender.

I’m starting to think this conference is much more top heavy than some might have anticipated. You have 4 teams (WOF, FU, UNCG, ETSU) battling it out at the top and then there’s a gap between those 4 and the rest of the conference. Not that those other 6 teams aren’t capable of upsets, especially at home (VMI nearly pulled a big one off today)..but for the most part those bottom six are pretty much relegated to playing spoiler...they won’t win the conference.

ETSU and Furman both kept pace tonight with big road victories. FU over VMI in Lexington 89-57 and ETSU over The Citadel in Charleston 98-73. Both the Bucs and Paladins are still a game back of Wofford at 4-1 while UNCG fell to 3-1. Mercer got their first conference win at home over WCU 84-80.

All SoCon play is now complete for the day. Wofford is the only undefeated team at 6-0, while VMI is the only winless team at 0-5. Furman falls to 4-2 with an 89-79 loss at UNCG. The Spartans are 4-1. ETSU goes to 5-1 with a hard fought 72-68 overtime win on the road at Mercer (1-4). The Bears are causing some headaches despite only having one conference win. The Citadel (1-4) fell to WCU (2-4) in Charleston 94-82 while Chattanooga (3-2) got by Samford (1-4) at home 80-75.

Since we are not playing it was a good night to watch the other teams. Interestingly, the two teams with the worst records were playing the two active teams with the best records-and they both went down to the wire. Both UNCG and ETSU squeaked out wins over WCU and VMI. VMI played very well against ETSU and kept coming back on them. Likewise WCU against UNCG. Coach Prosser's guys did a great job of giving themself a chance against UNCG. Now watching the game between Chatty and Mercer. Tied with just over 4 left.
There is not a team you can take the night off against. Amazing.

ETSU supporters have been talking a lot of junk on Twitter. Things like they are a different team since their loss to us and that other teams will have to “find out the hard way” that they are gelling and developing into the deepest and most talented team in the SoCon. And “I don’t care what Wofford is doing now, it will be ETSU/UNCG for the title”. I do not see it. I just don’t. ETSU and UNCG were far from impressive tonight. I know I’m almost alone in this thinking but I feel we have a shot to run the SoCon table- I just think we’re the best team. Yes, I know I’m biased, but still...objectively I think Wofford has the best roster in the league...and with Stumpe’s return coming we will be even better. We are favored in all our remaining games according to ESPN. As I said on Twitter, ETSU and UNCG do not seem appreciately better than they were a year ago. Wofford clearly is.

Today: UNCG beats ETSU in TN.
Mercer beats Sammy, VMI beats Western and El Cid vs. Chatt in a barn burner w 4 mins left. Win vs Furples tonight will start to put some distance between Terriers & So Con. Let's make it happen.

I’m happy with that ETSU result. That UNCG win today oughta shut those Johnson City folks up for a minute. The Bucs now have 2 losses and have fallen to third place.

UNCG is really playing well after their loss to us. The highlights show some spectacular play, and they are comfortable now that they are healthy. Their record in the conference will probably be 8-1 after they play Mercer this afternoon, although that game will be fun to watch.
We have a tough schedule after tonight. No doubt there is a bullseye on Wofford everywhere we go. Those road league games will be grinders.

Watching the Furman/Samford game. The TV guys are Furman announcers and very hard to listen to if you don't have a dog in the fight. They contest every call against Furman. Sharkey is eating their luch just like he did ours.
Wow, another wild finish. Samford hit a three with just over 5 seconds and Samford came back to win the game. Now Furman has 4 league losses. Rafferty is really a fine player for Furman. He just produces night after night. They figured out how to defend the big guy Guererro for Samford. He brings the ball down in the lane and Furman was all over him. Samford won for the most part with their quick guards who were able to penetrate and either dish or score.
Samford got one of those SoCon Saturday calls by the referees that could have easily cost them the game. The refs called an intentional foul when Samford was behind and having to foul. Even the Furman announcers said it was just what you have to do when you are trying to send them to the line. Scott Padgett did a great job of keeping his cool. The call looked as if it could cost them the game, but if Padgett had lost it he would have definitely cos the game. What a great two game combo Samford put together.

Samford beats Furman 75-73 in Greenville. Paladins blew a late 10 point lead. I am going to start referring to Samford as “Sharkey’s Machine” (with apologies to the late great Burt Reynolds of course).

I was very impressed with the crowd Furman had in Timmons this afternoon. It was kind of a weird starting time-4:30- and yet it looked like they filled it up.
