Anyone see this article? Any chance this happens? I would find it hard to believe.

Saw another article that didn't even mention him.

Conklin has 0 connection to JMU other than the transfer QB. I don't see him leaving for an FCS team. If it were about money, he probably would have never left Pitt.

Or at least that's what I hope

Conklin came to Wofford because of family ties. Wofford can't compete on the money side, so we have to choose coaches because of special circumstances. On the other hand, the pay in the coaching world has gotten so ridiculous that it no longer is a labor of love. But if you go somewhere for the money you have to be ready to be fired at the first bad turn of events.

Well that would be an unexpected and unpleasant turn of events for our Christmas...

Hopefully it won’t happen. I don’t truly think it will.

It is high praise that Conklin would be mentioned for the JMU job. They are a higher profile FCS program and have much deeper pockets. If money and/or climbing the ladder are important to Conklin then he'd have to listen. That being said, I get the impression that he is at Wofford for other reasons and while he may not stay as long as Ayers, I don't see him being a Mike Houston type guy who is looking to move quickly (even though he moved a good bit as an assistant). For now I will hope that this is just favorable press because I don't see Wofford being as lucky dipping back into the job market so soon (too much anxiety on my part that we'd end up with the guy I was glad we didn't pick last time).

Houston is getting paid a reported $1.3 million per year to coach at ECU; and ECU is reportedly having to pay JMU $500,000. ECU is an interesting job, just like the App job, which reportedly is vacant also, with Scott Satterfield going to Louisville. Both schools have had success, but they are isolated and in very weird conferences. Both schools think a lot of themselves, but are "red headed step children" to the rest of the state. They can fill a lot of seats-if the students go to the games.

I hope Conklin stays.

If not there is a local high school AD who could do the job.

Don't tease me. It's still a few years too early for me to start hoping he comes back, realistically.

There may also be a DC at Georgia Tech who could be looking for another job soon as well although stepping back down to FCS is probably not in the cards for him, though moving to Louisville could be.

As long as we have a desirable coach this will happen each year. If anyone has a way to prevent it for less than a couple of million dollars per year let us know. The most difficult part for Wofford or anyone in our position is getting enough money to keep good assistants.

There is now an decent sized crop of coaches out there with an Ayers/Wofford pedigree. Multiple at GT and one at Appalachian as well, plus others. As they move around and more join them out there over the next few years it will be interesting to watch.

Nate Woody popping up as a potential head coach candidate at App State. I'm biased but I think he would be better than Ruffin McNeil.
