2019 Recruiting

Postby lawdog on Tue Apr 24, 2018 8:57 am

It never ends. With several strong players leaving us after next season, we have been active recently pursuing their replacements. Very early, but looks promising. We are fishing in rich waters; we have not been timid, nor should we be.

Per Twitter, we have offered PG Trae Hannibal from Hartsville, SC 6'1", 200. Looks like a player. Also apparently offered by Ok. State, CoC, SC State, Stetson, WCU. Would really help us lock down other PGs as he looks like tough defender and dynamic athlete and versatile player on offense.

We have taken a page out of football's book, and have at least 21 offers out for the three slots in the 2019 class. It looks like a strong group.

I’m glad to see that we have already made an offer to Class of 2020’s standout guard Myles Tate of my alma mater Dorman High School. This guy is only 6’0”, 170 lbs. but he’s a super athletic player and terrific shooter, definitely one of South Carolina’s best high school players right now. He also has offers from South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, C of C, and PC.

Myles’ teammate and 2020 classmate, forward-center PJ Hall, who also has an offer from Wofford (as well as C of C, North Florida, PC, and South Carolina) is also very promising. PJ is the son of former Terriers forward Jerome Hall, who played with Greg O’ Dell on some excellent D-2 teams during my time at Wofford. His sister Thayer was the best high school volleyball player in the nation last year. I was hoping she’d come to Wofford but she is now a Florida Gator. At any rate, PJ is already a strong presence inside who goes about 6’9”, 220 lbs. and is still very young so he’ll likely grow bigger and stronger. This duo helped lead Dorman to a state title this year and don’t bet against Myles and PJ winning a couple more with the Cavs. I would love to see both of them in Wofford uniforms down the road. They are both good students too who come from good Christian families.

Per who twitter, we have a commitment from Zac Ervin out of Gate City, VA. 6'5" Guard. Looks pretty athletic with a number of dunks on video but also looks to be an excellent shooter and early hype says he could be a long-term replacement for Fletch next year. High praise indeed!

Ervin and probably Cattoor were on campus for the football game Saturday. I saw them walking around with Coaches Giltner and McAuley during the game.

Cattoor is listed as PG/Combo Guard. He is 6'3" 185 with pretty explosive hops. HIghlights show a couple of easy throwdowns and excellent range on 3s. Between him and Ervin you are probably looking at replacements for Magee and Hoover. Nice get with offers from Davidson, UCF, Belmont, and Furman that I know of. Probably need to be looking for a big guy to replace Cam/Pegram although Jones/Goodwin have promise.

Cattoor discusses the recruitment process. Notice he said he liked FU a lot but felt that Wofford was better for him. https://hoopseen.com/news/player/201809 ... es-wofford

Cattoor has an amazing skill set for a HS senior. Great addition.

Thanks, Hobo. Those sound like two really good players.

At the mid-major level, seems like it's hard to know much about how recruits stack up. At the higher level, it's pretty clear that if a guy is a McDonald's All-American or a top-100 recruit, then he's probably really very good. It's probably much more difficult for the average fan to be so sure about the multitude of 2-star recruits out there. Of course, hopefully the coaches know what's up....and, if the writer of the article in the post above has it straight, the WoCo coaches are pretty jacked.
