I think we have as good a chance to win the conference as anyone, like last year. We are very talented and deeper some places, though not in others. The league should be strong; we need to get our share of breaks and avoid the injury bug. A few of our younger guys should make meaningful contributions.

Last year, we had a notable number of close games and were 7-1 in 7 point games, an unsustainably high winning percentage in those close games. That level of success reminds me of the 2015 Carolina Panthers who went 15-1 and were 6-1 in 7 point games. That winning percentage was also unsustainable as the Panthers went 6-10 the following year. While I don't expect quite that drop off for us, I wouldn't be surprised for us to take a step back and finish with 8-9 wins and get to 2nd in SoCon play.

If I'm bored next weekend I'll take a comparative look at how 2017 compared to prior Wofford and or socon champion teams.

It doesn't really matter when analyzing this year's team, I just think it's useful to contextualize our strengths/weaknesses

This speaks to the razor thin margin between winning and losing. Little things can make a huge difference, like injuries, broken assignments, missed tackles/blocks, clock mismanagment etc. it truly is a game of inches. Which is why detailed preparation and total commitment by everyone is so critical. Time will tell....
I will go ahead and say it right now: this year does not foretell of JC and staff’s future record or performance at WoCo, good or bad. It will be a process. Our baseball program is a prime example of a development of a program over time as a work in progress.

The baseball team started from low talent and morale. This football team starts from excellent talent and morale.

Excellent talent but not JC’s talent.
We should be ok this year but that doesn’t necessarily predict the future.

I think 3-4 years is a good sample size for how good JC will be.

To be clear, that's not the same thing as saying "if we don't do x y z in 3 years FIRE HIM"

Just that, so long as we are closer to Wofford football circa 2016-2017 than we are Wofford Football 2013-2015, we'll be in good shape.

Three losing seasons in a row should result in a firing for any coach. And I think that’s very fair.

It depends on the circumstances of the losing seasons. If we are decimated with injuries or other outside issues then that is different than a situation with bad attitudes or behavioral problems. If the trend is bad and there isn't a reason then I am not necessarily opposed to a 3-4 year timeframe. When it is apparent that things aren't progressing and fan support is waning, then you have to make a move.

This week's Athol FCS preseason rankings have Wofford #16 & Samford #12. The locals (UNH) are #3- have a strong cast of returning starters.
Everyone is chasing No Dakota & Jas Madison. Should be an interesting fall...

Without our coaching change we are certainly ranked in the top ten; not a knock on anyone but just the normal effect of uncertainty. Foremost is maintaining our confidence, physicality, and team orientation. We have a lot of talent and experience: now, who among the players will step forward and LEAD, consistently and without fanfare. Any thoughts?

Good article on Trey McCray replacing Wheeler... Trey comes from Gardner Webb... Will coach OLBs and I assume recruit Tennessee since he’s from Clarksville TN... He played Tight End at Furman for Bobby Lamb.

Bad News: All F SoCon DL Deon Priester is off the roster.
This really hurts us.

Lufkin will need to step up, and maybe also move a couple like Brooks or Gardner over from a deeper OL group. And Brown, Horton, Mangum, Zamary, and Contee is a stout cadre. Perhaps there will also be plans to use our outstanding LB and DB units in some ways that will put less pressure on the DLs.
