The season is very young and from practice the coaches are developing clear ideas about their roster. Still, I will hazard a prediction about our starting five: Magee, Jackson, Murphy, Stumpe, and Goodwin.

Earliest off the bench will be: Hoover, Theme-Love, Pegram, Jones, Bigelow, Hollowell, and Aluma. We will be able to stay fresh; as Coach Young says, we are as deep as we have been in recent memory.

Thoughts?

I don't know as much as others do about basketball, but I don't think we have a signature defensive guard yet. There's a strong correlation between us finding that guy and being successful. Derrick Brooks was that guy last year, and we went on a small run, but when he was injured, we stumbled. In the past, Karl Cochran was that guy as well,

I think Theme-Love may be the guy for that, but as I said, I'm not as knowledgeable about these things and no one has differentiated themselves at this position yet.

Good observation YT. Early signs are that improved guard defense has been a priority in the off season ... we shall see.

Good points LD and YT. I cannot argue with the starting five. They are a solid group. as well as the others. the entire roster is full of talented players. Of course I like Magee and Jackson. Stumpe and Murphy too. The unknown is Goodwin. Only thing I heard about him is that he broke a goal while on their trip to Portugal. But I have the feeling he is going to be a good one for us. Of the other players the one I like the most is Aluma. Although I still like remaining players. Don't get me wrong. I just like Aluma a little better. No doubt about it the future is bright and we should have many good, winning seasons in the future. GO TERRIERS !!!!!

This is exactly why I am erring on the side of caution about my optimism for this year’s team...defense. It was lacking at times last season, which is why we failed to win the SoCon. We cannot win consistently without good defensive play no matter how good our offense is.

Fletch is SoCon Preseason POY. Terriers picked second in both polls https://woffordterriers.com/news/2018/1 ... -year.aspx

I had a chance to hear Roy Williams speak today in Chapel Hill. He had some nice things to say about our team, our coach, and Fletcher. He likes his team this year, but is very aware he needs to replace his point guard. He remarked about how we return basically our starting five.To his credit he also spent a good bit of time talking about the devastation to the Carolinas caused by recent storms and UNC’s impending efforts to raise funds for those who have suffered great loss. It reminded me why I have always admired Coach Williams.

HOBO- I am envious. I thought about going the season ticket route, but wouldn't be able to go to many games. I hate the empty seats in the good sections. However, as it becomes the place to be in Spartanburg there will be plenty wanting to use those seats. Eventually the Wofford ticket sellers will figure out how to re-sell tickets and make a profit twice! The online and social media world will work it out.

And LD, those of us who grew up living and dying with ACC and Big 4 basketball learned what was right and wrong about athletics. Regardless of the haters, Dean Smith and Roy Williams do things the right way-as do others in the coaching world. Roy has been on a mission to help the Carolinas and was denied a chance to play an exhibition with South Carolina in Charlotte that would have raised millions of dollars for people who have been devastated by the flood waters. The NCAA said it violated their pre-season rules.

When I was six years-old, I went to the Big Four Tournament -- UNC, Wake, Duke, NCState. It pretty much changed my life. Totally unbelievable.

Around that time, I also attended games in Andrews Fieldhouse. One of the most exciting endings to a game I have ever witnessed was when Ronnie Harris scored a last-second shot for Wofford to beat USCS in around 1978. Wofford games weren't always packed, even in that tiny gym -- but it was crowded for that game -- and very, very loud when then winning shot was hit. But that was against a fledgling USCS basketball program. Both schools were NAIA.

The idea of UNC playing here is pretty amazing to me.

In just a few days, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels will be on campus to play against Wofford.

Surprised there's not much chatter here. Anyway, any thoughts on possible starting line-up for Wofford? Any news leaking out about how practices are going? Who's playing well? Anything on the freshmen or on the progress of guys like Aluma and Hollowell? Has Storm got the starting point guard spot locked up? Fletcher shooting the ball like usual?
