All Division I schools which is a huge plus in my book. Very tough schedule though... might be the toughest schedule I've seen for a SoCon team so far.

Great schedule, but no off week will hurt us. We better be ready to play from the get go. Coastal is no Georgetown College. USC, State, and FU is our murderer's row. No offense to G-W fans but I would like to see us get a home and home with PC again. That was a great rivalry.

PC starts their transition into I-AA in the next couple of years so maybe you'll be getting your wish soon. I agree... the no off week is tough.

It's interesting that we play at Gardner-Webb for the second year in a row. I guess we needed a home game for 2007 (most likely Steve Spurrier is afraid to come to Gibbs Stadium) With all of our OOC games in-state (or in G-W's case almost in-state, there won't be a lot of travelling for OOC games this year or next. On the other hand, a few out of state games might bring us more attention. At least there are no non-D-I teams. There were a few moments last September when the Georgetown game outcome was in doubt.

I just saw App States OOC schedule.

@ NC State
JMU
Mars Hill
@ G-Webb

Furman, Western and App State all doing the ACC/SEC game and a D2 game. Will the SoCon even have an at-large playoff bid in 2006?

Bear with me as I try to explain my reasoning:

Because of the changes before last season, you need 7 Division I wins to qualify for an at-large bid for the playoffs... 8 is a better win total though as all at-large teams last year had 8 Div I wins (as far as I know but I could be wrong). Furman and Appy both play a Division II game which because of the changes doesn't count... so they basically only have 10 games to get 8 wins. One of those 10 games being an ACC game... meaning they have 9 games to get 8 wins or beat their ACC opponent (a definite possibility). Same goes for Western except they play Florida which means they definitely only have 9 games to get 8 wins. Not an easy task in the SoCon these days. If you're serious about the playoffs and you want to schedule a gimme it would just make more sense to schedule a Savannah State than a Mars Hill/West Georgia/Chowan. The selection committee will probably let either Furman or App State in with only 7 wins anyway but I would hate to have to rely on that. It just seems the margin for error is a lot smaller with the division II game so why bother with it?

good point. but as we have seen in the last 3 years, app and FU or any team with connections to the selection committe get the benefit of the doubt while we have to build our rep and over time earn our right to play even with 8 wins. it's still cooked to some degree IMO.

Why schedule PC? We have been busting out butts for 10 years in 1AA. If they were that big of a rival then we would have never stopped playing them. No reason for us to play them. Let them enjoy life in the Big South .

As far as I can see, Presbyterian is a non-issue right now. There is nothing to be gained by playing them until they are D-I. If that happens, which is still an "if", then it will be a different story because things would be equal. Currently, all the risk would be Wofford's and all the reward would be PC's.

Back in our D-II days, PC was our primary rival because the schools Wofford wanted to be rivals with were bigger and didn't really care about a rivalry (ie: Furman and The Citadel) and also because they are close geographically. Now, Wofford finds itself on the Furman/Citadel side of the rivalry issue. But, since we have know established rivalries with Furman and The Citadel, they would be at best our third biggest rivalry and I think most Terrier fans would consider GSU above PC as well. Plus, at least in the 90's when I was at Wofford, my impression was always that Wofford was a bigger rival for PC than PC was for Wofford.

As for them possibly joining the SoCon, I would think that is a possibility if, and only if, Coastal turns down membership when things get to that point.

FInally, I'll ask the big question on everybody's mind, "What is a blue hose?"

Well, PC is certainly better than Georegtown College and is more competitive than VMI (keep in mind PC was ranked no. 1 in D-II at one point last year). In my view, a local traditional rivalry against a quality opponent (albeit D-II) should not factor much either way. In other words, whether we lose to Coastal, PC, or G-W, if we take 2 form App, FU, or GSU AND win outv. the rest of the SoCon, we are pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot.
