No Football Banquet....

Postby 19TERRIER19 on Fri Jan 26, 2018 1:24 pm

Kind of a bitter sweet send off for the Seniors. Guys that paid their dues, went through the fires and all types of adversity, to bring us back a SoCon title, and back to back Quarterfinal Finishes and 10+ win seasons. Only to be basically waved to on the way out. I understand that coaches have left, things have changed, but IN MY OPINION, it is a crummy way to send these young men off, My son being one of them. I have always valued the Wofford Education and experience for RJ, but we have also sacrificed plenty to play football there. Playing receiver in that offense has been a largely thankless position, and one that we still are thankful for the opportunity. But to get to the end of the road, and the school not even recognize them for their achievements, and the hard work for the foundation they have laid...........needless to say we aren't exactly thrilled with. So to sacrifice your opportunity to catch the ball, and be an integral piece on an offense is one thing, but to be escorted out unceremoniously...........poor form.

Signed

SMH

Those kids deserved better than that.........

Not that RJ did his part and helped lead our team to reach its goals....but also helped open and maintain a pipeline from Central Ky to Wofford and helped bring in players like Mikel Horton and Mason Alstatt...and will be bringing in another big time player in Van Cleave (Mr. Football in KY) from Danville...........you're welcome......

If that is true...then that is not a good start for JC. Part of knowing where you are going is understanding where you have been and honoring those that got you to that point. Part of me wonders if this is an Admin thing not a JC thing. 19, you may know better than the rest of us how that went down.

19 whether the school appreciates your son or not, I have to say that he was an important part of this team for the past four years. He made crucial catches in more than one game and if he had not done that then those games might have been an L instead of a W. Good luck to both of you. You may and probably are correct Altdog7 that JC was not the one responsible. This sounds like a school decision rather than the HC. Maybe it was done to cut costs but I have no idea. I am just speculating

If it was an Admin thing, then it really undermines any credibility JC may have started with to current players.

This is really dumb (not the OP, but the fact that there's no banquet).

One thing I've realized about Wofford is that a lot of institutional routines are done by the same people, and when those people leave there's a scramble at the last minute to make things right.

This is on the administration, not on CJC.

Inexcusable.

I'm very disappointed. The final banquet is an important step in closing this chapter of our lives. I graduated in December but drove down and back in one day with my father to be at my senior/last football banquet as a player.

It's not about who the coach is, it's about the players who gave up the typical college experience to represent the school on the field, to thank them for working a more than full time job while still being exceptional students.

Thank you to your son and his classmates, 19. This alumni is proud of them and the work they did on and off the field.

It doesn’t matter Who the coach is or whether a new coach had been hired yet. This is something that should have been planned and carried out by someone in the administration! This has nothing to do with Conklin. Someone with the school definitely dropped the ball! Unacceptable! It can still be planned and carried out and should be.

I don't like this one bit. How hard is it to put together a nice banquet to celebrate the achievements of the team and the seniors? This is a big misstep by someone and it makes me very sad that these guys aren't going to get this experience. Not cool, WoCo.

This is extremely disappointing. I have lost all faith in the administration and their ability to protect what makes Wofford special. They should be ashamed that nothing is being done for this team.

What can be done to correct this for the boys? If it is a money issue then let us know, I am sure we can raise it. As a former player, I would gladly support the current team and help make this right.

If it is a leadership issue then they should step up and take care of the kids that represent our school so well. This goes for the president, AD and the new coach. The new coach doesn’t get a pass on this for being new. It is his program now. He needs to take care of the guys that worked their tail off this year. He needs to honor the commitment of the seniors that advanced this program. He has been entrusted with something special. He can honor it or turn his back. We can learn a lot about the new coach through this. I have been vocal about not liking the coaching choice. Here is a chance to show me I am wrong and he gets the parts that make Wofford special. It would go a long way in my book. I hope he steps up and does the right thing. Someone needs to because I doubt Johnson or Samhat will do anything.

I too have been skeptical about the hiring of the new coach. People at Pitt did not seem too sad to lose him from what I’ve gathered. And THIS just deepens my suspicions that he may not be what our football program needs. This is a slap in the face to our outgoing seniors...19Terrier, I am sorry this happened to your son. He deserves better. But it also may signal a deeper issue. I hope this does not show the beginning of a downward spiral of our football program that sees everything that Mike Ayers build over 30 years unravel. Color me very concerned right now.

After seeing this thread, felt a reply was needed. While it is true that the traditional banquet held in conjunction with the end of spring practice is not scheduled, we are going to honor the team later this spring. The goal is the have an event where the team will receive their SoCon Championship rings, but we are not able to set that date until we get an estimate of when they will be ready (as they would not be ready by the end of spring practice). Hope that clears things up.

If what Terriervision says is true, then a simple explanation that the traditional football banquet will be held later in the Spring when the rings are in and everyone can be properly recognized should be sent. It isn't rocket science but one of those situations where lack of communication can have some really unintended and unnecessary, negative consequences. Hopefully Terriervision or someone that has a connection can reach out and correct this before it really creates a problem. There is no reason a player or student should leave Wofford with a bad taste in there mouth. The "old school tie" needs to worn with pride and for a lifetime.

True, communication is key. Continuity, in this regard and others, must be assured; the AD must make sure that it happens.

Without fail, every year’s seniors must be genuinely honored and thanked.
