Proven or not, this is going to shake the Carolinas, the Panthers and Wofford to their foundations. Facts always matter, but perception matters almost equally as much these days. Will those affected close ranks around Richardson or cut and run? Time will tell, but I sense very dark days ahead.

No one has meant more to the Carolinas and all its residents in the last thirty years than Jerry Richardson. Compared to other things, especially actions, we have read and heard about in recent times, and even witnessed in the work setting, these generally anonymous and vague whisperings seem pretty ho-hum.

Has anyone seen the letter circulating where the Panthers will be for sale following the season?

Unfortunately I think 4 cash settlements tend to lend to more than just an “attack” by the media. The subsequent sale of the panthers also is indicative. I hate it because he has done so much for Wofford. That being said.......conduct yourself professionally at all times and this shouldn’t be an issue. I have a daughter, and I don’t sympathize for those that treat women in any way other than 100%.....

As a father of 2 daughters, I agree. However I spend my professional life seeing “cash settlements” made every day that have little to no basis. Exorbitant legal fees for defense, bad publicity and unknown outcomes with judges and juries prompt settlements. It’s called risk management.
Civil lawsuits and claims are by in large legal extortion in many ways. Doesn’t validate claims in the least.
Would be interested in knowing the amount of these cash settlements.

I can understand that......and in my professional world I too see cash outs as an easier remedy for certain scenarios. But then comes in the subsequent announcement to sell the team immediately following the season. 4 cash settlements already settled and handled with a gag order......why is it necessary to sell the franchise all of a sudden? Not a good look in my opinion.

As this goes on. More info will come out.

I think anything that would be speculated on this site could be foolish and embarrassing at the very least. I don't think anyone who would be on this site could have any idea whatsoever what really has occurred within the Panthers organization. I don't know that anyone knows why Danny Morrison suddenly resigned from the Panthers or why Richardson essentially fired his sons. For a lot of reasons and in a lot of ways that organization keeps very quiet. It is a privately held corporation, and unless someone decides to leak information to an outsider there is no way to know what goes on inside.
Jerry Richardson has been very good to Wofford College, and I hope the College benefits from the sale of the Panthers; I hope they get top dollar the way the LA Clippers did; and I hope the new ownership keeps the team in Charlotte.

I think conventional wisdom was that his sons were going to sell the team anyway once he passed on and this may have just hastened that eventuality.

It was previously known that the Panthers would be sold by Richardson's estate when that time came. This just speeds up that timeframe a bit. I believe things will be done in a way to keep the team in Charlotte, but you never know. I suspect a new owner will either buy their way out of the Wofford agreement as soon as they can, or just let it run its course and move on. Holding the training camp at Wofford has been transformative for the College and beneficial for the Panthers and I would hate to see that end, but it is probably time for us to stop budgeting for that money and looking at it as lagniappe for as long as we get it. No one but Jerry Richardson knows what his will contains and frankly it is none of our business. He's certainly done enough for Wofford. Maybe he's done with big gifts, maybe he's not. Time will tell and if there is anything it may very well not be publicized. I hate where this has gone and what it is doing to Mr. Richardson, the Panthers, the Carolinas and Wofford, but this is apparently where we are and we will have to wait and see how this plays out.

It is unlikely the Richardson family could ever afford the inheritance taxes on the Panthers and the stadium. The team could go tax-free to his wife, but the taxes would be due when she died.
He is currently 81 years old, and doesn't seem to be in good health. He did not stand up during the JRIS opening ceremonies, and is routinely photographed riding in a golf cart. He has also had a heart transplant.
He was born in 1936 in rural North Carolina and attended all-white schools, and to be honest, an all-white college. A racial slur occurring in his elder years would not be unexpected, although still not appropriate.
He, so far, has not been accused of fondling, rape, or pedophilia.
We need to let the investigation run its course before rushing to judgment.
