While our defense definitely looks worse from the ol' eye test, I remember some of the advanced stats from a few years ago showed that we actually didn't perform all that well on a points per possession allowed basis. Rather, our offensive tempo was so slow that the number of possessions was lower and thus we did well on total points allowed. Since our offense has picked up a bit, I wonder how that has affected our defense. Additionally, it would seem that with us shooting an increasing percentage of three pointers, I wonder if that leads to more opportunities for points in transition for the other team. Unfortunately I don't have a resource for those stats to back up my argument so forgive the hottakes but perhaps someone has ideas/stats to corroborate/disprove that thought.

Any early practice reports?

Point guard is the big BIG question.

But, also, the development of the big guys could be major. Lots of size returning, and great potential depending on how Pegram and Jackson are coming along. Sounds like Aluma could be an real contributor, too. And I liked the way Lowery played last season.

I would think Hoover might play a bigger role -- good shooter, confident and tough player.

Magee -- well, we can hope he just keeps on filling it up like he has the past two years. If his ball-handling has improved some, he could be nearly unguardable.

Other freshman? Sounded like they were high on Hollowell. Murphy with the flashy dribbling and passing. Again, lots of minutes up for grabs at point guard. Experienced guys like Theme-Love and Brooks will surely be in the mix.

With a few things coming together, this could be a special team...

This is a less technical point than my other posts but it seems like it takes 2 full years after a group of Socon champ seniors graduates for us to find a new rhythm and be super competitive. I think we saw bits and pieces of that in the socon tournament last year. We saw Cam Jackson take huge strides as a big man last year, and in tournament time, so did Pegram.

It'll be a fun year this year I think. I'd say the two things to watch are Pegram and the point (the two p's if you will)

I think Theme-Love will do just fine. He looked really solid to me last year. I saw him the other day on campus and he has really filled out. Looks great.
I am very interested in Murphy and his ability to create and score.
Someone on the perimeter has to take and make some shots to take some pressure off Fletcher. And Cam just needs to take over and exert his will on the game.
To me, our success largely depends on getting better on the defensive end of the floor.

Magee and Jackson make All SoCon. Terriers picked in the bottom. How many times in the past have the Terriers done better than the preseason predictions ? We will have to wait and see what happens. http://athletics.wofford.edu/news/2017/ ... socon.aspx

Amazing how different the coaches poll is from the media poll. The media does have the top 6 bunched fairly close together.

I feel certain we will do better than fifth or sixth. With a break or two we will be in the hunt. We will need leadership from our veterans, which must include improved team defense, and significant contributions from our younger but talented cadre.

I’ll be quite disappointed if this team we have this season finishes sixth in the SoCon. I don’t get why the coaches think so low of us. Maybe because we do have a few young players and unknowns on the roster...but these guys sure seem like more than sixth place quality to me! The most overrated team is obviously the Furman Purple Pukes. I’ll bet a cold beer we finish ahead of them. OVERRATED! (Clap-clap-clap clap clap), OVERRATED! And no way Samford finishes second place either...they are never good in basketball.

Here is a chance to get a sneak preview of our team on November 1, when they play GWU in a charity game. Anyone going?
