I switched over to the FU-WCU game after ours ended, and it is somewhat painful to see Furman execute our offense in a way that we can no longer do.
We continue to struggle with the triple option. Yes, Newman runs it a little better than Goodson, but we have struggled at times when Joe was playing, also. Wade Lang used to be able to make adjustments when the option wasn't working, but has apparently forgotten how to do that. The quick toss to the running back on the 3d and 14 was well executed, but inexplicably, we made no further attempts to get outside for the rest of the game.
In the other hand, this is classic Mike Ayers/Wofford football. For years, we have had difficulty putting games away and letting weaker teams take us down to the wire, nevertheless, we usually win.
I was surprised that Joe Newman only touched the ball once, but there seems to be pattern that a backup who plays well one week, rides the bench the next. I suspect the coaches trusted Goodson to hold on the to the ball better, and to their credit, this game was decided by a turnover.
