Statement Game Right out of the gate.....

Postby 19TERRIER19 on Fri Sep 01, 2017 11:16 pm

I'm not one for skirting around a topic or issue. So I'm going to say exactly how I feel. I think Wofford is a national title contender. I think this is a fantastic way to start the season with our hated rival, and I think it will serve the right purpose as we come out focused and sharp and out an early warning shot out to the SoCon and the rest of the country that this team is for real. I look for wofford to hit on all cylinders and put the clamps on Furman.

I tend to agree with the sentiment in this article

Got to bring it strong today. Can't win 'em all unless you win the first one!
It will be a war, just like it always is with them.
No mental errors, take care of the ball, and EXECUTE!

I think Wofford can win by a score similar to what is called for in the article, but I think the game will be close for a good while. Clay Hendrix understands the Wofford/Furman dynamic and will have his guys up even if the talent level isn't where he wants it to be. I wouldn't be surprised to see this as a close game through the first 2-3 quarters with our guys pulling away late as our OL and DL wear the Paladins down. Optics are important in games like this so I hope it ends up that the end result is convincing and leaves Wofford on a high note headed into next week's road game, but in the end, as always, I will be happy with a win of any flavor.

In retrospect great calls by everyone. Nothing is easy when Wofford and Furman play, and every team knows exactly what we are going to do on both sides of the ball. I would think we are very easy to game plan-not necessarily easy to beat. The game at Mercer is going to be very big, because it will be a month before we play another conference game. Our guys now know we have to do more than show up to win, and our upper classmen must get the younger guys to understand that.

I agree Boulder. Ironically, I changed the ending of my last post from "a one point win" to "a win of any flavor" just before posting it. I guess I was initially more right than I knew.

Also, let's not forget that Bobby Lamb knows a thing or two about Wofford as well so this is almost like playing Furman all over again. Mark and Thom mentioned that yesterday. If Wofford can win in Macon next Saturday then they will be in good shape to relax a little and have a good shot at being 5-0 headed to El Cid. If they can't, then the pressure will really be on and they'll be playing from behind the eight ball. My guess is that the players and coaches understand this and will be ready.
