Opening day is here! Florida A&M at 4:00 today in Talahassee! Hard to believe it's now baseball season. I think our success all depends on how fast our young players, particularly the pitchers, can develop. I would predcit it will be a bit of a challenging year compared to the past couple of season. Time will tell.

Ugh! Inauspicious start to say the least.

I'd just like to point out that since we went D-1, baseball is the ONLY men's sport ever to lose to PC. Football never has. Basketball never has. Soccer never has, at least not in many years. Even tennis never has. In fact, even our women's teams rarely ever lose to PC in a sport. What does all this mean? It means we need more baseball scholarships.

Although I don't disagree with conclusion - it's cherry picked fact. You could also say baseball is the ONLY men's sport to beat two Top 10 baseball teams in the country (USC, Clemson)/future D1 national champion/etc. Baseball beating top top 10 USC would be like Football beating Ohio State last year or Basketball beating Kentucky. That's why comparing across sports is a fallacy (wins and losses in baseball are so much different than Football and Basketball)

The pitching staff is very young. It looks like a rebuilding year. I hope for improvement during the season and a show of promise for the future.

More resources are definitely needed for baseball. All our sports fit that bill, but baseball is at a particular disadvantage compared to many others. I personally don't believe this is the only issue holding Wofford's baseball program back, but money is certainly the top of the list. That being said, our players work really hard and generally do a great job overcoming as much as possible.

I agree with everything you've said, especially the part about our players. The players are the victims of the program's shortcomings, financial and otherwise. They are dedicated student athletes who deserve better fates on the diamond. It is actually impressive that the program has seen the limited success that it has (one SoCon tourney title, a couple of 30 win seasons); that is all due to the work and dedication of those players. Let's reward them by taking this program more seriously and putting some much needed and well deserved resources into it! Mr. Johnson, please think about this if you read it!

Here's some really depressing news. We lost to LaSalle 7-6 yesterday to fall to 3-9. LaSalle was 0-11 before they played us. I know I have a reputation for being negative, especially on the baseball forum. It's not that I want to be this way...I am merely calling it as I see it. I would love to be positive. But there have just been very few positives to discuss thus far in 2017. It is like the program is starting all over. Again. Look, I really care about this school and all of its programs, athletic and otherwise. It hurts my heart to see this continue to happen. And no one that really matters and could make an impact seems to want to do anything about it, which hurts even more.

My feeling is that Wofford has had to make hard financial decisions about which program will receive a greater share of the available resources. In this respect, Wofford athletics is no different than any other business. That being said, it is clear that a ceiling has been reached and that it is unlikely that anything will drastically improve unless more money and more focus is given. I'm not blaming the administration for this at all. They are playing the cards they are dealt the best way possible just like the players as mentioned previously.

You might have a point. Resources are not unlimited. We have to do what we think is best with with we have. By the way, Wofford defeated Longwood 6-5 for their fourth victory, so there's a positive.

Team is now 7-10, having won 4 of last 5. Yale comes to town for four games, starting tonight at 6. All games televised (click on here): http://woffordterriers.com/schedule.aspx?path=baseball

With today's 6-2 win over Yale, the team has taken the first two games of that four game series and has won 6 of its last 7. The record now stands at 9-10...a big improvement from 3-8. It isn't exactly a murderers row that we have been facing, but after the start we got off to any positive is definitely a nice step in the right direction. Hopefully our young pitchers are getting more comfortable with the stepup to college ball from high school. I still foresee some struggles in conference play (which begins next weekend against Furman), as SoCon play will be yet another big step up for the team. But at least now there seems to be some hope that the team can continue to develop and improve and become competitive with at least some of our conference bretheren this season, with better things to come in the next couple of years.
