Shanesy tweeted that tests still haven't been run on Butler's knee. He also said that Ayers said Evan Jacks may play this year.

I know true freshmen aren't often ready to take the lead in a college offense, so I'm not getting to wild about this.....but wasn't Newman a guy the coaches were really excited to sign last year? Seems like he was touted as one of the better QBs Wofford has gotten in a pretty long time.

Correct Newman was highly touted. He was also offered by Army, AFA and Navy. He is fast - a 40 of 4.5 or 4.58. a good passer as well as a shifty runner. He showed his shiftiness on one play in the ETSU game and it is on the IWF video.

If we are going to have to burn Newman's RS, then let's get him snaps. Put in some play packages he can focus on, and ease him into game action. He has a definite skill set. Let's use it.
Still want Butler to be cleared and back though.

Question...Is Newman's Red Shirt year forfeit as soon as he steps on the field?

I'm sure one on you brilliant football minds will know the answer.

I agree with Ruckus on designing him a couple packages to operate in the system. IF we are taking off the RedShirt then lets take off the kid gloves and get the young man some reps. I think some unique packages could give the Wofford Offense some juice. Get him some Wildcat action. and some run pass options that let us open up in a couple packages designed for him. Especially if Brad is down for an extended period of time. Also, loved hearing that Evan is making some serious strides in his rehab and may possibly be able to make a return. WOW!!!

I'm no Ortho, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night and I played just over 2 seasons of SoCon Football with no ACL in my right knee and still don't have one today - MANY years later.

IF he had surgery to repair a completely torn ACL, he would need Ernest Angley, Jimmy Swaggart, and maybe The Big Guy Himself to get him back on the field this season. Typical return to sports time is 6 months...or more.

On the other hand, IF he had a complete ACL tear and DID NOT have surgery (as I didn't - because the leeches used to test my knee didn't turn green or something like that & the Doc's/Barber's said it wasn't 'completely' torn - an MRI and meniscus surgery 25 years later said otherwise - She GONE!), he could POSSIBLY play after about 6 weeks with a HEAVY TAPE JOB & A HEAVY BRACE...and a good bit of pain...and a lot of 'wobbliness' feeling. As a fat, slow OLman with limited skills, that didn't hurt me much, but I'm not sure that, given his particular & abundant set of Football Assets (quickness, speed, shiftiness, change of direction, agility; among others), he would be a shadow of himself if he did try to get back on the field this season.

On the 3rd hand, IF it was only partially torn; he (probably) wouldn't have needed surgery & he could be back in those same 6 weeks with a little lighter-than-HEAVY Tape Job & a little-lighter-than-HEAVY Brace, but maybe more pain than a complete tear would cause...and he could be about 75%, if he can deal with the pain and the 'wobbliness' feeling.

Whatever the case is, I hope it works out for the best for Mr. Jacks. Would love to see him back playing this season (honestly) and finish out his career doing what he obviously loves to do.

In response to PC, I believe Newman's redshirt was burned the moment he took a snap on Saturday.

Shanesy said Butler has an MRI scheduled for today. Will probably know something tomorrow or Friday.

Regardless, he won't be playing for a while. We are playing "next man up" for now.
