Oh yeah. Also remember wearing high top sneakers in the god awful dome. The turf was horrible.
Also remember watching game film from the ETSU/Cid game the week after Bunoconti was paralyzed.

So, Ruckus, you played AGAINST Coach Ayers when he coached ETSU?

Looking at the stats 3 games in, I've noticed 5 key improvements from last year. (Believe it or not, JCS did not skew our statistics that much).

1) Our passing completion percentage is higher than last year (through 3 games)
2) We haven't turned the ball over much so far (twice in 3 games including 0 interceptions)
3) Our average punt is about 10 yards longer than last year
4) Our third down conversion rate is right at about 50% (10% higher than last year)
5) Through 3 games we have 8 sacks. Last year we had 18 for the season.

Though these stats may seem abstract, if we can maintain these numbers I feel good about going into the season. It's true that Butler may not have the speed of Jacks when running the option, but we get a tangible benefit in ball protection and passing ability. Our offense is a ball control offense and the ability to convert on third down, even third and long is a very valuable asset. Having a viable passing threat that the other team has to respect opens up other options as well.

On defense, if we get pressure we'll win games, and it seems like we're doing that. The ability to pressure the QB (obviously) makes him make mistakes, causing stops, and this alongside our offense being (relatively) more efficient (given our competition so far) is a winning formula in the future.

I think the next two weeks will tell us how good of a team we are. ETSU is huge for reasons already alluded to, but also because every year but since 2003 (2004), when we've started 3-1 or better we've made the playoffs. Now, I'm not saying 3-1 will necessarily mean playoffs but I think there's something to be said what such a start does to our execution and confidence. Samford walloped us last year too, and if we can go 2 of 2 the next 2 weeks we may be close to "back"

But we have to focus on ETSU and execute. I'm sure ETSU has the full attention of the team, given their performance against WCU

ETSU will come into Gibbs with a lot of confidence. Looking at their message board, their fans certainly expect to beat us. If we come in with our A game and play our best for four quarters, we will win. Anything less than that and we open ourselves up to an upset. Not profound, but there it is. We are actually being made a 29 point favorite for this game. That's probably too big of a spread. I'd be happy with a 1 point win. Getting the victory and going 1-0 in conference is all that matters...it doesn't matter how we get it.

I have read the stats from ETSU's games and our games and read the posts here and on anygivensaturday. I feel like I have a pretty good grasp of where we are as a team. We usually play close to lights out at home and this Saturday will be no different.

Our team is beginning to "jell" and the confidence is growing. Yet, I sense a greater deal of humility with this group and feel they will take noting for granted.

We will win Saturday and I predict:

The Terriers are fully focused and are dialed in on ETSU, the best thing for us was ETSU beating Western. Won't be overlooked coming into Gibbs. We get our SoCon slate off in good fashion this saturday for family weekend. I love our defense, combine that with a powerful O line (best in SoCOn) and you have the makings of a title contender. If teams plan on scoring a bunch on our Defense they are sadly mistaken, deep and skilled we will control the Line of Scrimmage and make ETSU 1 dimensional. And that wont get it done.

ETSU will be the next test for Wofford and they deserve to be taken seriously, but I'm not seeing where their fans can justify this as being in the bag for them. Western was up 21-3 and let them back in the game. In fact, Western's performance could easily be characterized as an implosion. This is not to say that ETSU didn't earn the win, but it doesn't make them anything more than they are. If Wofford plays mediocre or better football they will win regardless of what ETSU does.

I saw over on their board that they have a line of Wofford favored by 27.5. Where would they see a line to an FCS game?

Don't know, but I have to think the game will be closer than that. They are gunning for us. We'd better focus and do what we do.
