2016-17 Season

Postby lawdog on Mon Aug 01, 2016 12:22 pm

This year we find ourselves in a situation unlike any we have been in.

Although we lost some experienced talent, we have: (1) many seasoned and talented players returning, and (2) a large and promising recruiting class coming in (best ever?) that will push for playing time early.

It should be a most interesting year. It will be curious to see what kind of schedule we put together. Hopefully it will be challenging (as usual), but not one that beats us down too much early with numerous away games against national powers.

Pretty stout OOC slate. Will definitely be a test for us; only 2 real fillers in Mars Hill and UVa-Wise.

There are some really fun trips for our guys. Going to Miami, Colorado, Ft Worth (with Mark Cohen SID) and Baton Rouge will be quite a learning experience. I hope they get to eat food that is found in those areas. Ft Worth-Beef! LSU-Cajun Food! Colorado-Eric's choice! Miami-Cuban! They also get to go to stay in the Tampa Bay area for a number of days. It also has a great Cuban influence along with the gulf coast seafood.

Unfortunately, the home schedule is fairly weak. 2 D-2's, 1 NAIA, and only one D-1. The BenJo deserves better for its Swan Song.

It's pretty hard to attract teams to the Benjo-gotta pay them. We are doing a lot to prepare for the opening of the JRIS, which means giving 2 for 1's and playing for $ to build up the coffers for those first couple of seasons at the JRIS.

Challenging schedule indeed.

Settling on a starting five, and early rotation, will be a very competitive process this year, with returning talent and six very promising freshmen. At this point, I would project Garcia, Magee, Sawvell, and Jackson as four starters. Perhaps also Pegram. It is likely we will play eight or nine on a regular basis. Among the newcomers, it will be important to identify good defenders and players who are physical, and who can penetrate and create their own shots. Team D needs to be a priority. Thoughts?

Think we have another wing rather than a big man like Pegram but I otherwise agree. Nathan Hoover is supposed to be another sharpshooter so it would be great if he could be another high impact freshman in the mold of Fletcher. It's amazing the youth we have in this program right now. If a decent amount of the Class of 2015 (Jackson included after the redshirt) and Class of 2016 pan out, we could really be in business for years to come, especially with EG's veteran leadership.

Good point. The Tuckers look promising as well, in terms of being slasher and aggressive types. Perhaps Lowery too.

I'm a little let down that the final game at the BenJo will be WCU. I was at the first game in the arena when we almost upset The Citadel and was hoping we could end the BenJo era with a win over The Citadel. I guess the athletic department is looking forward (not back as I am), which is not necessarily a bad thing.

+1
I wish we could close the BenJo down with a win over Cid or FU.
Gonna be a bittersweet event for sure.
BenJo more than any other building on campus represents to me the journey and progression we have taken from NAIA to D2 to D1. It stands as a symbol and reminder of the success our program has had which literally paved he way for the JRIS. Good home court advantage.
Lots of memories in there dating back to my time at Wofford. My first day on campus got my preseason physical in the there, practiced football and baseball in there at times during inclement weather, conditioned in there (ugh), played intramurals and pick up games there, had dances/functions etc. Big part of my days at WoCo.

anyone remember playing blitzball during intramurals? A medicine ball and a rope as high as a volleyball net...

Derrick Brooks was a highly recruited and versatile player out of high school. He made a significant contribution last year, and it would be great to see him do even more this year. One thing we could use is a shut-down stopper on the other team's best-scoring or ball-handling guard. Too many teams penetrated against us way too easily last year. Derrick has the quicks and physicality to stop that, while also rebounding and hitting the open man and shot. This could be his year.
