Free public college education?

Postby woffordgrad94 on Tue Jul 26, 2016 9:16 pm

If Hillary Clinton wins, she is going to propose a free college education for anyone making under $120,000 a year (almost everyone). How would this affect Wofford? Would Wofford, as a private school, have trouble getting students since many kids could go elsewhere for free?

Bill Clinton proposed something similar 20 years ago. Nothing came of it.

Free Public Education sounds good, but the details are difficult. Who pays the bill: states? the feds? Do you cover room and board? If so, is the government just paying for 4 years of party time?

I suspect that if such a program could be passed through the Senate, that it could have a devastating effect on the academic integrity of the better public schools, and make quality higher education more valuable. People will pay for high quality (Wofford, Furman, Davidson) or religious education (CSU, NGU, Liberty).

Most likely, the "free" education will be limited to community colleges.

Hillary's plan:

I'm sure the State of South Carolina is going to get its checkbook out to help.
