GA Southern on Probation

Postby Terrier NH Dude on Fri Jul 08, 2016 6:55 am

From ESPN trailer: NCAA places GSU on probation for 2 years; something about 2 staff members making special academic arrangements to keep players eligible.
Tarnishes last season's accomplishment/bowl game. Enough said...

So GSU has two staff members get creative in helping their athletes stay eligible and gets smacked. Meanwhile UNC conducts fake classes for 18 years in many different sports over many different coaching staffs and is walking away Scott free. Don't get me wrong...UNC is a fantastic institution but they lost control of their athletics program. GSU needs to get too big to fail I guess.

The actual sanctions on GaSo were minimal, far less than UNC's. GaSo was not smacked, and UNC did not escape anything like Scot free; the penalty part of their process will further unfold in the next sixty days, and it is not likely to be pretty.

This news from Statesboro is not shocking. The ends have justified the means there for quite some time.

As for North Carolina, their case will be a watershed for the NCAA in that either a forceful message for reform can be sent or it will be a slap on the wrist and a wink. UNC's reputation is already in tatters and the NCAA can join them in that if they sweep this under the rug.

The difference at this point seems that coaches were active at GaSo in helping athletes do/find papers, etc. At UNC, the academic bureaucracy allowed crip and phantom courses that athletes, and other students, took for the quick pass or good grade ... the coaches were not creating or managing the player's curriculum ... two different problems. At UNC, the higher academic officials (shamefully) tried to shed all responsibility for such laxness onto the underlings. Pretty sure that both types of practices are pretty widespread in college sports, since sports is at least as important as academics these days.

As for UNC's academic reputation, Kiplingers continues to think most highly of it, for the 15th straight year. http://www.kiplinger.com/slideshow/coll ... index.html

Interestingly, one of the violations occurred while they were still in the SoCon and routinely getting beat.

Yeah, but did you really think they were playing by the same rules as the rest of the SoCon?

I actually have mixed feelings about cheating, er bending the rules a bit. I know it's morally wrong and I was brought up to avoid doing it. But doggone it, just about everyone does it at some time or another. GSU has achieved a great deal on the gridiron over the years, and I'm sure most of us knew, or at least strongly suspected, before this that they had "bent the rules" at times to aid their cause. I'm sure most college football programs have done it, no matter what the level. Wofford is the exception, not the rule. And so there comes a point where when you are determined to "stay straight", your program falls behind. Is it worth a small tarnish on the reputation to achieve all the great things GSU has? Hmmmmmm...it's according to how bad you really want to win vs. how important integrity is to you. For some there is little to gain by remaining a "goody two shoes" and it would be totally worth it, for others honor is on a higher pedestal than success. I won't blatantly come out and say what side of the fence I'm personally on...I think everyone kind of knows which way I lean anyway.

Hmmm, never thought of GSU as a place that achieved great things.

I hope this is the case, but I am not naive enough to think that nothing questionable has ever happened at Wofford. I certainly think our administration does everything it can to run a clean program and I know of no specific instances of anything out of line occurring which is as it should be. But, I try to be too "holier than thou" with other programs because eventually it could come back to bite us. Look at UNC, they've been peddling that "Carolina Way" stuff forever and they have proven they are not immune even in spite of decade of looking down their noses at others. I hope I never see Wofford involved in anything like either of these situations, but things happen and crow can always be served.

It's true that it's best to remain cautious in this regard, but then again I just can't picture Wofford cheating. Their pristine image is one of the things they really seem to pride themselves on. It's been that way for years. In fact, doesn't the Latin motto mean "she shines with untarnished armor"? If something ever came out on Wofford I would be truly shocked.

Well, strictly speaking of football, they do have those six national championships, and that's in just thirty-four years of having a program. Wofford has been playing football since circa the 1880s and we still have zip.

Absolutely. I agree. I am always proud of the way Wofford conducts its business. That isn't by coincidence because I know our administration tries hard to maintain that image and our coaches recruit kids that can uphold that standard. However, we are dealing with humans and humans can make mistakes. I just don't want to earn a reputation as a school that brags about being better than everyone else and then has problems.
