2015/16 Schedule

Postby Hobo on Thu May 21, 2015 10:20 am

This popped up on Twitter today

Jon Rothstein @JonRothstein
North Carolina will host Wofford on Wednesday 11/18/15 as part of its non-conference schedule, source told @CBSSports.

Kevin Giltner retweeted it, which seems almost like a confirmation

Wish this had been a third round NCAA matchup back in March, but I'll take the exposure.

Hmm... while I like the exposure, I have a feeling this will be reminiscent of the Duke game from last year since UNC will likely be preseason #1. I would have been more excited for this matchup last season when we were better and UNC was worse. I hope we schedule some competitive mid-major programs this year and some lagging high majors (think Clemson, Wake Forest, etc.) that we can be competitive with because I think the likelihood of us matching up well with, let alone beating, UNC is pretty slim and I'm not quite sure what we get out of such a game except exposure/publicity.

Charleston caught them off guard a few years back, but having had Roy Williams watch our game in Jacksonville and the fact that we beat NC State last year seems to preclude them looking past us.

Here in NC who knows what the future is for UNC? There are those who think there won't even be football and basketball teams! I don't know who thinks UNC will be #1, but that isn't even close. They won't be #1 in their 10 mile radius! This will be a good game for us because of the exposure and relationship. You're never going to pass up the opportunity to be on the court with the best.

Here are a couple "Way-Too-Early" Top 25 lists that have UNC at or near the top http://collegebasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/01/updated-2015-2016-college-basketball-way-too-early-preseason-rankings/ & http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/tournament/2015/story/_/id/12623594/kentucky-wildcats-headline-early-top-25-ranking-2015-16-men-college-basketball-season. As you said Boulder, we'll see what happens post-academic scandal fallout but I think it's safe to say UNC will be a top team. I definitely understand not turning down a chance to faceoff against a blue blood of college bball, just hope we get some games against other good mid majors (ex. Iona, William & Mary, etc.) that our team can really use to develop, especially after losing the likes of Cochran, Skinner & Swinton.

The impending complete exposure of "The Carolina Way" and all the fallout that will follow may lower a few banners (certainly the 2005 NCAA banner since a good chunk of that team was involved), but it isn't going to weaken next year's UNC team at all. They may lose scholarships down the road and Roy Williams may ultimately have to fall on his sword, but they will be a quality team capable of winning their conference. Wofford needs to approach this game as if they are playing with house money and just try to hang around. If they can be within a possession or two late, then who knows that happens.

Automatic loss. What's next, Rupp Arena? These blowouts don't really help us. I would prefer to see the Tiggers or Lamecocks instead as big schools we schedule for exposure...we can beat them. And I agree about scheduling some good mid majors like William & Mary, Sam Houston State and Iona again. These games are great...very competitive and fun to watch. And those teams are much more like SoCon teams and prepare us much better for conference play than taking it on the chin at UNC or Duke. Hopefully we can get a number of these mid-major games at home and avoid having to schedule the Emory and Henrys of the world for home games- because those type games draw few fans and don't help our team much either.

It directly helps recruiting to go into a recruits living room and say "you want to play in the ncaa tourney, Cameron Indoor, Dean Dome!"

Fair enough. It could sway a guy or two to play for us.

I prefer the UNC matchup to games against NAIA or D2 caliber opponents. Now that we've established ourselves as legitimate basketball contenders in mid/low-major basketball, hopefully it'll be easier to get more home&home games against other good mid/low major teams so we won't have to schedule the Emory & Henry's of the world just to get a home game. Having a state of the art arena will help as well. I just doubt that telling a recruit "Hey, we play at Cameron Indoor & the Dean Dome" does as much when we're getting destroyed by 25-30 points. I think we have to accept that we're not on that level right now and instead, keep building up to that with constructive games against similarly competitive opponents rather than elite teams

You guys act like the bottom of the SEC and ACC is just lining up to play us. Clemson and South Carolina want absolutely nothing to do with our hoops team. Wake, Virginia Tech, BC, GT, Auburn, Ole Miss, Alabama.....nope, they don't want any either. The problem with success is no one wants to play you. They look at your roster and see everyone coming back. Expect us to play one traditional power a year for the next few years.

But everybody isn't coming back! We are losing two starters who were major contributors to the success of our team. Karl Cochran was Mr. Everything. He was one of the best scorers, passers, and defensive players ever at Wofford, and one of the tam's top rebounders and shot blockers to boot. Lee Skinner was another one of our top rebounders and scorers. And more important than that he was a great team leader; the heart and soul of our team. In addition, we lost John Swinton, a key man off our bench. Duplicating last year's record is going to be VERY tough. Not saying it can't be done, but it's quite a mountain to climb.

But I still get the point wocomouth is making. We have established a track record of success and teams know we will be tough, especially on D. That is bound to scare some lower tier teams in big conferences off. But I still think we can get one or two on the schedule.

This is the downside to success: scheduling. Don't look for much to change in the near future. In fact it may get worse. Good news is we will probably get some nice pre-Christmas tournament invites.
94 is correct: we lost a lot. But reputations (and schedules) are built on past performances not future potential. The cupboard is not bare but some guys like Allen, Jackson, Sawvell, Brooks and McKinight are going to have to step up.

UNC will be strong, especially inside ... better than last year. We can hang with them unless we let them get us into a track meet, which is what they like to do (sometimes more than they should).

We have the potential to be as good as last year and perhaps more versatile. The will and heart must first be there, as they were last year.
