Thanks, WG94.
Terriers handled the Furples last week; so, let's do it once more with gusto!

Rival Furman, then potentially Samford and Mercer. A tough path to be sure. And that's if we keep winning. And we almost have to win the first two games- our pitching depth is likely not built for fighting our way out of a loser's bracket. So let's focus on the Purple Pukes, a team that played very well down the stretch.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first inning, 2 seed Samford came from behind to beat 7 seed WCU 8-7 in ten innings. We play next, at about 1 PM.

Game didn't start until 8:30 because of torrential rain. FU scores 6 in top of 1st. We go up 8-6 by bottom of 3rd but now tarp back on field and game is stopped because of rain. Talk about having to perservere. Nothing is ever easy, is it?

The #3 Terriers win 16-7 over #6 Furman. GREAT job by pitcher Elliott Lance, who really gave our pitching staff a boost by pitching all six innings played today, giving up only 1 run (a solo homer in the 8th). Elliott allowed us to save our pitching staff, which is very important in a tournament like this. The Terriers next play tomorrow morning at 8:55 AM against Samford in a winner's bracket game. Furman must next play tonight against WCU to stay alive in the loser's bracket. That game will be played after The Citadel meets UNCG in another elimination game. It's always great to beat the Paladins in any sport. Great win.

In other action earlier today, #1 Mercer edged #8 The Citadel 3-2 while #4 VMI edged #5 UNCG 6-5. So all top four seeds are now 1-0. Mercer will play VMI in the other winner's bracket game tomorrow after the Wofford-Samford game. Personally, I think the order of these games should be flip flopped, but nobody asked me.

Late results:

The Citadel 8, UNCG 4 (UNCG eliminated)
Furman 12, WCU 4 (WCU eliminated)

Friday's schedule:

Wofford vs. Samford, 9 AM
Mercer vs. VMI, 12:30 PM
Furman vs. Wofford-Samford loser, 5PM
The Citadel vs. Mercer-VMI loser, 8:30 PM

The game vs. Samford is huge. Win it, and we get two chances to win one game on Saturday and advance to Sunday's championship. Lose it, and we have to come back and beat Furman again tomorrow afternoon, then also win two games on Saturday to get to the championship.

Just lost an absolute heartbreaker to Samford 4-3. After trailing most of the game, Wofford scored three in the top of the eighth to take a 3-2 lead. But Samford scored two to win in in the bottom of the ninth. Two things. We left 11 men on base in the game, including the bases loaded twice. That often comes back to haunt you, and it did. Also, I have to question the decision to take Luke Leftwich out of the game after the 7th inning and ask Will Stillman to do something he hasn't done all season- pitch two full innings for a save. Leftwich was in a groove, rolling along. He struck out 9 today over seven innings, never walked anybody, and gave up only 2 runs. What a performance. I would have left him in at least for the eighth inning. I think Coach I went to Stillman too early.

Now it gets tough. We have to win in a game against Furman this evening (at about 5), then win two games against Samford tomorrow in order to advance to Sunday's final. That is a very tough task. Our pitching staff will really be put to the test now.

Adam Scott threw a complete game shutout as Wofford stayed alive tonight by beating Furman 1-0. Furman is now eliminated. If nothing else it is great to beat the Purple Pukes again and end their season! We take on Samford at 9AM. If we win, we play Samford again at about 5PM for the right to play in the championship game Sunday. Still a HUGE mountain to climb! The Citadel eliminated VMI ,who had lost to Mercer earlier today, so the Keydets are eliminated and the Bulldogs are in the same boat as we are, needing two wins against Mercer tomorrow.

The Dogs keep the season alive and force a 5PM rematch with Samford with a 12-8 victory, the 39th of the season. Matt Milburn went 6 2/3 for the win. Way to battle Dogs. This team has a lot of heart and fight in it. But the elephant in the room now is do we have enough pitching depth to get us through another game tonight and then a championship game tomorrow? I have no idea who will start the next game. Our three weekend guys all worked yesterday and today.

The season is over. This one definitely wasn't a heartbreaker. Samford scored 10 runs in the first inning to take control early and then kept piling on. Final of 25-4. If there is a such thing as running up the score in baseball, Samford was guilty of that today (I say that in jest). Anyway, we just ran out of pitching. At the end of the day, we just didn't have the pitching depth to win this tournament. Sadly, this may well be due at least partly to a lack of funding and scholarships. We need more. This was a rough way for our seniors to go out. But let's look at the positives. We had a heck of a year, especially considering our aforementioned funding situation. We set a school D-1 record for wins with 39 and had by far our best ever SoCon season. We have some great young pitching arms coming back. For the first time, there is actually a good bit of optimism surrounding the program. Coach I should get votes for coach of the year in the conference. Great job Dogs. Let's come back strong next season.

This may well be the turning point in Wofford baseball. Just shy of 40 wins and a semi-final game away. It was a great season and one of which all the seniors can be proud. Sure, they wanted three more wins, but that first game against Samford was the biggie. We got the lead and then blew it, and from that point on we were behind the eight ball. There is virtually no level that can play that many games-including the delay and then morning fiasco- and have a pitching staff that can compete. Great job guys, and what a great attitude they built and maintained.
