USC Upstate loses in A-Sun tourney final

Postby woffordgrad94 on Sun Mar 08, 2015 7:04 pm

I know a lot of you don't like to even acknowledge the existence of our neighbors across Hearon Circle, but Coach Eddie Payne and the Spartans are building a pretty good program over there. Today they fell just short of their first NCAA tourney berth, losing 63-57 to North Florida. Being a native Spartanburger, I think it would have been really neat if both D-1 programs in Spartanburg made the NCAAs together. I think it will happen one day. And I still say it's time to put USC Upstate on the non conference schedule. They would be a quality opponent for us.

Eddie Payne has been a good coach for a lot of years.

I wish them no ill will, although if you searched this board you could probably could find where I have in the past. An A-Sun title does not equate to a SoCon title, but it is still an achievement that comes with a NCAA berth and it's not their team's fault what conference they are in. They'll get one before long and I agree that it is time for an annual game with them. Something like that could take on the tone of other cross town mid major rivalries like VCU/Richmond or at a little higher level Cincinnati/Xavier. If both programs continue to have strong RPI's, then it is more likely to happen.
