We won another big game at ETSU, but there is not much time to celebrate it. We are back at it with an early afternoon tipoff Sturday in Lexington, VA against the VMI Keydets. VMI pusked us to the limit last month in Spartanburg in a 75-70 game that we trailed in with less than 3 minutes left. But VMI has been struggling lately. Their season arguably hit rock bottom Tuesday when the lost by a whopping 29 points, 85-56, at home against last place UNCG. The really lived up to the Very Much Inept name I once gave them (due to their football). I hope they play like that again Saturday. But I suspect that they won't. We have that bullseye on us and I think we'll see a much better effort from them against us. The Terriers and Keydets are quite different. We are all about defense. They are all about offense and they love to play a run and gun style. In such battles, defense often wins out. Let's hope it does in this game. If we slow down their offense, we should be able to score enough to win because they are not very good on defense. And let's hope our guys aren't looking head to Chattanooga; this is a potential trap game. But with the veteran expereience on our team I doubt that will be a problem.

Their team hasn't been the same once Q.J. Peterson had to shut it down for the year. They were able to adapt some but he was their leading scorer and it's tough to still compete without your best player. We need to play strong defense, especially on the road, play disciplined offense and not panic if they extend full court pressure to try to speed us up.

Is this on SoCon Digital Network ? Let's take care of business and put this one out of reach early. Also, we could use some help from WCU and furples today, too!

Wofford up 42-24 at halftime; a very solid first half. We've had no problems with their press. Cochran was hot eaarly and had 14 poiints. Now let's not let the Keydets back in the game! Keep the pedal to the medal and don't give them any hope!

By the wy, VMI's gym is way too big for a school less than the size of Wofford. I'm glad we decided not to go in tht direction.

I don't like the way this second half has started. Our lead is down to 11. These comebacks by our opponents in the second half is becoming a disturbing trend. Are we getting outcoached/out adjusted in the halftime locker room?

I don't know how, but we hung on to win 65-62. Two big free throws by Neumann with 13 seconds left. But what an ugly second half! We turned the ball over more than I've seen us do in quite a while. A win is a win, but we were lucky to escape after blowing a 20 point second half lead.

This is getting to be a bad habit. It appears that losing a big lead has taken over for starting very poorly. I think I would take the latter rather than the former. It's a win-number 20 and an amazing first 12 conference games for our Terriers. Headed back home on a long bus ride, but they will be in their own beds tonight. Big game on Thursday night. Go dogs. We have three teams now that we don't have to play again in the regular season-Samford, ETSU, VMI.

I am hoping we don't draw VMI in the tourney. I don't care what their record is. When their press works and they get hot from three, they are VERY dangerous. And we've benn hurt a lot by Phillip Anglade inside.

The way I see it, the teams I'm scared of are ETSU, VMI, and Samford, just based upon the style of play they have. They can upset us in the tourney. The good news is that we're 6-0 against them this year and thankfully we'll probably only play one in the tourney. If one gets hot, we may play 2, but that's it.

They, along with Mercer, are the teams that scare me the most. Chattanooga does too.

Cochran said postgame that breaking the trap is one of the team's weaknesses and that they are working on it.
Overall, I see teams being able to throw ten to 20 minutes at us but not a whole game. It's still scary, though, and thankfully we have had the veteran leadership to weather the storms. (damn, that was some good clichéing :D but I believe it and so does the team)

The difference between the 1st half was our continued turnovers and their 3 pt shooting. They went 3-7 for the first half and 7-17 in the second half (that's including the last second prayer shot so maybe we can say 7-16). They shot really well going down the stretch and we had difficulty breaking the press (again). One thing that I noticed we did in the 1st half but, almost inexplicably, stopped doing in the 2nd half was we would break the press and have a 2 on 1 advantage and there were multiple times that we pulled it out to set up the offense instead of playing the advantage. I know MY wants to slow the game down and play methodically but you have to think a couple easy buckets in transition off the press break would give the Keydets pause about running their press quite so aggressively because it worked in the 1st half. These last second victories are great as long as we get the W but I'm afraid it's gonna cost us another game this season in addition to the one we lost in Charleston. Hope I'm wrong though.
