It was a good series. Your guys played hard. They can really swing the bats. I was impressed with Gilmartin at shortstop. I already knew how good Redwine, Waring, Kirkley, and Eaves were.

The difference for the entire series was the relative strengths of the two bullpens. Simple as that.

The Wofford coaching staff clearly didn't have much faith in their bullpen. And when you look at the numbers below you can see why. They didn't want to go to the pen in the first place. They didn't want to bring anyone else in when the bullpen struggled.

Coach Jordan has a ton of faith in Copenhaver, Smith and Saunders for the Bulldogs. Those guys have been one of the strengths of our team this season.

Friday - Citadel 11 Wofford 8 (10 innings)
Wofford Bullpen 4.1 IP, 9 hits, 7 runs, 6 earned, 4 walks, 3 K's
Citadel Bullpen 3.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 0 earned, 0 walks, 4 K's

Saturday - Game 1 - Citadel 17 Wofford 5
Wofford Bullpen 4.0 IP, 8 hits, 9 runs, 9 earned runs, 6 walks, 0 K's
Citadel Bullpen 3.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 earned runs, 1 walk, 1 K

Saturday - Game 2 - Citadel 8 Wofford 7 (10 innings)
Wofford Bullpen 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 runs, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 3 K's
Citadel Bullpen 6 IP, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 4 K's

Weekend Totals
Wofford Bullpen 13.1 IP, 22 hits, 19 runs, 18 earned runs, 13 walks, 6 K's, ERA 12.15
Citadel Bullpen 12.1 IP, 10 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 2 walks, 9 K's, ERA 0.73.

Good luck to you guys for the rest of the season. See ya' come tournament time!

Excellent post, DocJS- thanks for the stats.

Bullpen seems to be our issue- except for the one win against CofC with 9 innings by Austin and Vartanian, our pitching was less than stellar (especially in game 3 of that series).:(

Doesn't bode well for the rest of the season. With the Davidson series coming up, we need a couple of wins to stay on track for an improved SoCon record this year.

Doc, your analysis sums it up very nicely. You have an established,
solid program and we don't have the arms to compete in the SoCon.
Good luck to the Bulldogs.

No. It doesn't bode well for you guys.

I think you'll win some slugfests just because you swing the bats so well. But sustained success will be difficult if your pitching, especially out of the bullpen, doesn't improve.

Best of luck!

Thank you very much! Nice to get a compliment in "enemy" territory!

If you had seen us at Western you wouldn't say that! LOL

You guys are MUCH, MUCH improved over where you were five years ago, IMHO. But without question, your bats are ahead of your arms.

Back at ya'. Maybe will hook up in the tourney!
