Saw where Gilmartin, a transfer from UC Irvine, was named to the second team preseason all-socon.

What can you tell me about him? And how did a California kid wind up at Wofford?

More importantly, how did an incoming freshman with no SoCon
experience get voted onto the All SoCon second team?

LOL Well...that's what I WANTED to ask, but it seemed so bad coming from a Bulldog fan!!

I'm guessing this kid must have been drafted coming out of high school. Then gotten hurt or didn't play for some other reason at UC Irvine as a freshman. Then comes 3000 miles across the country to play for (tongue in cheeek here) that noted baseball power Wofford...just didn't exactly add up for me. I figured one of you guys knew the scoop??? :?:

Terriers,
come on. I know you're admittedly a bit older and slower, but don't let those bulldog fans bait you into questioning a Terrier on the all So-Con Roster. This kid was a sophmore last year, so he is transferring with a history. He was 3rd team All California in '05. Check out this link to his stat page at UC Irvine-

He's also listed as a player to watch coming out of high school

Admittedly I am older and probably quite a bit slower than you young
pups but the fact that he played for Wofford did not trigger my question.
It still amazes me that a conference as distinguished as the SoCon
would select an outsider who has never played in a conference game
to the all conference team. Regardless, I am delighted that he is a
Terrier.

Boss,

I come in peace, my fellow canine brother!

I'm not questioning why there is a Terrier on the All So Con team. I know several of the Terriers personally from my son's experience with them either in high school, AAU or in the CPL and think they're fine young men and excellent baseball players.

My question is: Why is ANYONE on the all SoCon pre-season team who hasn't played a game in the Southern Conference?

And how did he get from UC Irvine to Wofford?

Also, he's transfering in as a freshman (or at least that's what it says on the Wofford Athletics web site). So, I'm thinking he went to UC Irvine as a freshman, got hurt or didn't play for some other reason, and wound up 3000 miles away from California at Wofford. There's got to be a story there. I don't know what it is, but there's got to be a story...

Now, maybe he's "all that and a bag of chips" as the young people say. Obviously the coaches think so or they wouldn't have voted him to the team.

Best of luck. The start of the season is a week away!

Terriers, good response-no offense I hope with the older comment, you are by far one of the most knowledgeable poster on the board. I was giving more of a hard time to our friends from the Citadel!

Let's not get carried away with questioning the conference preseason rankings-All they are is a bunch of hooey assumptions anyway-perhaps the conference is weak at SS this year and with this kid's pedigree they feel he has potential to be a power in the conf at that position.

I am cautiously optimistic about this year's team. Waring was a solid SS
with good power and he has been moved to third to make room for this
kid. If this kid is as good as advertised and we have an all conference
player on second in Kirkley, things could get interesting. Of course it
all depends on our pitching. At any rate I don't see how we cannot be
improved.
