John Wooden, and a few others, had it right. He did not enter the game trying to win. He entered focused on great execution and playing to 100% of the potential of each player and the team, knowing that if he did that then the wins and losses would take care of themselves. That approach works better in developing good longstanding habits and success. It appears to me Coach Ayers takes that approach too. When a team or player thinks in terms of taking a game off, it is a slippery slope.

I can assure you that the players that took the field did not take the game off and did care if they lost. The truth of the matter is Upstate started their ace and played the game as if it was a conference game. Wofford players wanted to win, but they had planned on using about 5 pitchers in the game. It takes a lot of luck to use that many pitchers and not have one of them have a bad night. Wofford can not afford to use the weekend starters when they need to win some(hopefully2) this weekend. In fact Wofford took out their starting pitcher after 3 great innings to also have him for relief this weekend. The relief pitchers had off nights on Tuesday. That is all there is to it.

Not to mention the fact that we had already beaten Upstate twice this year. Of course the players always play to win. We just did not use our top lineup or pitcher as they did. Whatever...bottom line is to stay focused on the big picture (conference) and take care of business when it really counts. And don't get hysterical about a midweek loss.

Is Wofford going to the SoCon tourney? Will the results against Samford change that one way or the other?

Right now there is a 4-way tie (8-16 conference record) for the 8th spot in the tourney between Wofford, Western, Davidson, and Citadel. I believe we hold tiebreakers over Davidson and Citadel, while Western holds a tiebreaker over us. With six conference games left for each of the 4 teams, every game counts. I think it's gonna take 11 or 12 wins to make it in the tourney, and it has to start with Samford. Good luck to the players, and have fun on that awful bus ride.

We have our work cut out for us. Samford is a solid team and having to travel to Birmingham won't help matters. And I thought UNCG was bad! They were rated very low in the preseason polls, but they are in second place- they are the surprise team of the year in the conference! At least we get them at home though. If we can win the games with Cash Collins pitching (he might be the best Wofford starting pitcher in its D-1 history) then find a way to win 1 or 2 more, we will have a good chance at making the tourney.

Yes, we have the tiebreaker over the Citadel (beat them 2 out of 3) and Davidson (swept them), but we lost 2 of 3 to WCU.

Fell short in Game 1, 7-1. Hopefully we can come back strong tomorrow.

Wofford won game #2. Tom Dolinak pitched lights out. Cornley was great in relief. Left a bunch of men on base, but got the job done. Whether this team makes the tournament or not, you people out there need to know there is not quit in these guys. Now let's get a win Sunday and put ourselves in the drivers seat next weekend.

Way to bounce back, Terriers! I have to admit I was not real optimistic after our ace Cash was beaten in the first game, but I really have sincere belief that this team can make the tourney now. A win today to take the Samford series would definitely be a huge step toward that goal. This team really is fighting hard, and I can appreciate that. GO TERRIERS!
