Lady Terriers earn second straight SoCon win

This team is really turning into a competitive bunch.

They play Furman Saturday at 3PM, and if I were not going to be out of town, I'd be there. It would be great for them to see a good turnout of support at FU in recognition of their efforts.

From the Spartanburg Herald-Journal article today:

Wofford (8-7 overall, 2-3 SoCon) had not won back-to-back league games since February of 2002, when the Terriers beat Furman and Appalachian State. After that, Wofford didn't have a winning streak of any kind until three in a row at the beginning of last season.

Progress has been building, but Farmer said he feels something happened to the Terriers in the days leading up to the televised game against Charleston.

"That was right after Georgia Southern (a 74-58 loss on the road)," Farmer said. "We were tired, things weren't going our way, and we weren't playing very good basketball. But they really committed themselves in practice and really laid a foundation. Now you can see the poise. Their eyes are different."

Elon (7-8, 2-3) scored three quick baskets to start the second half, turning a three-point deficit into a 29-26 lead. The Phoenix were still up 41-36 with 10 minutes left. Wofford chipped away until going in front on a free throw by K.C. Correll at 5:12. Mary Jo Yee calmly swished four straight free throws in the final 1:10 to put the game on ice.

The Terriers were able to catch up by using a twin towers lineup that included both centers, 6-2 Jennifer Weurding and 6-3 Kate Dempsey, and both were on the floor in the final minutes as well. Weurding had 10 rebounds and four blocks. Dempsey, an Elon native, made a turnaround jumper to tie the game at 43 and finished with six points.

"They give us a huge presence on both ends of the floor," Farmer said.

Wofford now has three straight road games, beginning 3 p.m. Saturday at Furman and continuing against Appalachian State and Davidson. The Terriers aren't at home again until Jan. 22 against UNC Greensboro.
