A sad day for Wofford and Spartanburg...

Big John, Thanks for passing that along. We all have our Mr. White/Beacon stories and memories. What a great friend of Sparkle City and Wofford he was.

Two of my favorite memories of John White...... I was in line as Mr. White came bringing a sandwich back to one of the sandwich makers. He was not happy with the amount of meat in it and told the guy to "make it like he was making it for himself". The other memory is of John running the pay station and never using an adding machine. He did it all in his head and it was correct to the penny. Problem was many folks didn't think he could that and challenged him so he had to put it into the adding machine to prove it. Over time he quit adding it in his head altogether.

Most every time we went to the Beacon wearing a Wofford sweatshirt with a group he would send out a cake or ice cream on the house. As a Spartanburg native he is a true icon, leaving behind a wonderful legacy and family. Heaven O' Plenty for Mr. White.

Back when I was still flying helicopters we used to land in the vacant lot across the street and eat lunch. Mr White always brought a banana split to the table for the crew. Don't think we ever finished one off.

Losing 2 true icons in Mr. Milliken and Mr. White mere months apart has dealt a blow to the Spartanburg community. They don't make 'em like those 2 any more.
