The Southern Conference this morning selected West End Field as the site for its 2009 baseball tournament.

The tournament has been held in Charleston since 1990. It will move to Greenville in 2009 with Furman University as the host team, then return to Charleston in 2010, conference commissioner John Iamarino announced.

West End Field is the 5,700-seat home of the Greenville Drive, the Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. West End Field opened in 2006.

The 2007 SoCon tournament, held at Joseph P. Riley Park in Charleston, drew announced attendance of 31,298 for its 16 game. Wofford won the championship, downing The Citadel in the championship game before 3,882 fans.

I think it will be good to play at a neutral site that is more centrally located to the conference footprint. Plus, Charleston has the basketball tournament so it makes sense to have the baseball tournamnet elsewhere. It'll get it closer to the conference office which will save costs for the league, too.
