Statistical Odds

Postby BestOfBreed on Wed May 30, 2007 3:44 pm

The weeks column from Boyd Nation has the odds of each team winning the regional, super regional, and college world series. It's based off the teams ISRs which is defined below:

The ISR's are the results of an algorithm designed to measure the quality of a team's season to date by combining their winning percentage with the difficulty of their schedule. The algorithm computes all teams simultaneously and attempts to take advantage of inter-regional games more accurately than other rating systems.

This weeks column:

[pre]
W-L RPI ISR M Probs
South Carolina 42-18 11 15 17 57/29/ 3
North Carolina State 37-21 18 35 33 23/ 9/ 0
North Carolina-Charlotte 47-10 43 43 35 19/ 7/ 0
Wofford 30-31 140 177 200 1/ 0/ 0
[/pre]
Basically, his numbers say Wofford has a 1% change of winning the regional and no chance of the super or world series. In comparison, the gamecocks have a 57% chance of winning the regional and 29% of the super followed by 3% chance of winning the world series.

Those stats and $4 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

Anyone looking at the stats, records and seedings could tell you South Carolina has the best chance of winning, followed by NC State, then UNC-C, and then Wofford. This guy must be a Rhodes Scholar.
