CHARLESTON, S.C. – A record three Southern Conference baseball teams earned bids to the NCAA Baseball Championship, it was announced on Monday. The Citadel, which claimed the league’s automatic bid by winning the SoCon Baseball Championship on Sunday, was joined by at-large bid recipients College of Charleston and Elon.

The Citadel (42-20, 24-6 SoCon) was awarded with the No. 3 seed in the Columbia Regional, where it will face No. 2 seed Virginia Tech on Friday. The Bulldogs will face either top-seeded South Carolina or Bucknell, the No. 4 seed, on Saturday in the double-elimination regional. This marks The Citadel’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2004. The Bulldogs led the Southern Conference from start to finish in 2010, claiming the program’s 13th league regular season title to go along with its eighth tournament championship.

College of Charleston (42-17, 22-8), which finished second in the Southern Conference regular season standings, will be making its fourth NCAA tournament appearance in school history and first since reaching the 2006 Super Regionals. The Cougars are seeded second in the Myrtle Beach Regional and will take on No. 3 seed North Carolina State on Friday. Host Coastal Carolina, the No. 4 national seed, is seeded first in the regional along with No. 4 seed Stony Brook.

Elon (38-22, 19-11) was also rewarded for a strong regular season with an at-large bid to the Atlanta Regional where it is seeded third. The Phoenix, making its third consecutive regional appearance and fourth in the past five seasons, will face No. 2 seed Alabama on Friday at 3 p.m. ET. No. 1 seed Georgia Tech and No. 4 seed Mercer round out the field in this regional while the Yellow Jackets are the No. 8 national seed.

After sending two teams to the postseason in five of the last six seasons, 2010 marks the first time in conference history that three SoCon teams have been invited to the NCAA Tournament. The league’s three bids ties for the fourth-highest among conferences, trailing only the ACC, SEC, Pac-10 and Big XII.
