Congratulations to Coach Wallace. Should make people associated with Wofford happy we have such good alumni out there.

SMC's Wallace named Region 10 coach of the year

Tim Wallace of Spartanburg Methodist College has been named Region 10 baseball coach of the year for the fifth time and second in four seasons.

Wallace guided SMC to a 43-8 record, 27-5 in league play during the regular season to earn the top seed in this week's tournament being played in Burlington, N.C. He also won the award in 1992, 1998, 2000 and 2007. The Pioneers, looking for their 10th league title in his 19 seasons, have won three of the past four.

SMC opened the tournament with a win Wednesday night, giving the Pioneers a winning percentage this season of .843. Their all-time record in that category is .872 (41-6) during the 1998 campaign. Wallace is 851-255 (.769) in his coaching career at the school.

Wallace, a Lancaster native, is a former Wofford standout who played two years for the Terriers and was a second-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals. He still holds several Wofford records, including a 37-game hitting streak in 1982.

SMC sophomore closer Kyle Owings, who recorded the save in a first-round tournament game Wednesday night for his league-leading 10th of the season, was named Region 10 relief pitcher of the year. During the regular season, he went 3-1 with nine saves and a 2.73 ERA. He has signed to play next season at the College of Charleston.

Also making the all-region first team were Dorman High School product Sloan Gilliam (.407, 10 HR, 54 RBIs); Marty Gantt (.388, 8 HR, 37 RBIs); Rob Harding (.422, 39 RBIs); Tyler Jackson (.382, 6 HR, 38 RBIs); and starting pitcher Corey Rhoney (9-0, 2.09 ERA).

Gilliam and Gantt finished second and third, respectively, for region player of the year behind Trey Holms (11 HR, 37 RBIs) of Pitt Community College. Hunter Acklerman of Louisburg was pitcher of the year. He went 8-1 with a 1.40 ERA.

Congratulations Coach Wallace.

We lost 13-0 on Sunday. Our pitching is horrible. We have to score 10 or more runs at most games to have a chance to win.
