The Trojans were coming off a 9-0 win over Blythewood on Thursday, but got in a hole early against Spartanburg.

Chad Smith started on the mound for Northwestern. He came into the game with a 5-0 record and won his last start 1-0 over York.

Smith wriggled out of some trouble in the first inning.

Spartanburg put runners on first and second with no outs. Smith caught Luke Weber looking at a third strike. Brian Poteat followed with a sharp grounder to third baseman Zach Watts' who fielded it cleanly, stepped on the bag and threw to first for the double play.

Traylor helped himself in the batter's box when he led off the second inning with a bloop single to left and moved to second on a groundout by Brandon Landrie. Caleb Jennings stroked a run-scoring double to the gap in right-center field to give Spartanburg a 1-0 edge.

In the third, Smith could wriggle no more. Spartanburg scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Nicholas Myers' groundout was the first out of the inning but then Clark Wise walked and Smith surrendered successive singles to Weber, Poteat and Traylor.

Traylor's single through the right side of the infield scored Wise. Justin Gullickson reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Weber. Poteat came in from third on a balk.

Brandon Landrie laced a single to left fielder Heath Myers. Gullickson was waved around third but was cut down at the plate on relay throw from Watts to catcher Chris Hyatt.

Smith went three innings giving up four runs on seven hits.

“We play defense, we pitch a little bit and give ourselves a chance to win,” Spartanburg coach Tom Myers said. “It was fortunate for us to get out to a lead.”

Northwestern (23-4) will host either Blythewood or Easley at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Spartanburg (14-10) will await the result of that game and play on Wednesday.

“The pitcher threw strikes. He has a different release point,” Northwestern coach Mitch Walters said.

“We left too many on base. We made mistakes tonight that we hadn't made all year.”
