A.P. (Spartanburg SC) 13:10 In a shocking news announcement today Southern Conference Commissioner John Iamarino announced a re-alignment of the teams for men's basketball play. Starting this upcoming season there will still be two divisions, but the teams in each division will change and the names of the divisions will also. Making up the new "Saviors Division" will be Davidson and College of Charleston. The rest of the SoCon teams will make up the other division known as "Everybody But Davidson and College of Charleston Division". Teams in the Savior Division will play each other 18 times this upcoming season with the regular season champion getting an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. The loser of that division will get an automatic bid into the NIT tournament if they do not recieve an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament.

Teams in the "Everybody But Davidson and College of Charleston Division" will play each other an undeterminate amount of times as it really doesn't matter how many times they play as none of them have a chance at winning the Southern Conference and advancing to post season according to conference officials.

The Commissioner replied when asked what prompted the change "It is obvious to any fan, even the casual fan, that Davidson and College of Charleston are clearly the dominant powerhouses in the conference and as Commissioner it is my job to emphasize the strengths of our conference. If at any time in the future any of the other teams show any inclination to actually becoming a decent team consideration will be given to moving them into the division with Davidson and College of Charleston." Further he added "In particular I want to thank College of Charleston and their deep pockets for repeatedly saving the SoCon's existance. In their honor we have named the upper division, the Savior's Division."

Coaches at the schools were not available for immediate comment.

I'm looking forward to playing in the "Everybody etc. Division" as
apparently we have nothing to lose.

In related news, CoC will be trying to represent the SoCon for only the 2nd time since joining the league over 9 years ago.

Davidson has determined to further reduce its football budget by applying with the NC High School Athletic Association and hopes to play 3A football starting in 2007. However, Davidson will not be able to play in post-season because of conflicts with final exams and the start of mens basketball season.

Which begs the question of how the SoCon is able to function and exist in the fall when the "saviors" are AWOL. Silly me, I thought real conference members (much less "saviors") would field football teams.

P.S. Hey, UC1987, when you get a football team and compete in the 3 major sports(i.e. most expensive), then you can talk trash. Until then you best be thankful we put up with you. it's not real hard to direct one's resources to just one sport and be competitive.

The "UC" in his name stands for University of Chattanooga. Many people around the conference mockingly refer to College of Charleston as the "Saviors". They won the nickname on 3/7/03 when the Post and Courier printed a Gene Sapakoff piece called "The Cougs must save the SoCon".

Thanks, Cat. The sarcasm was lost in the translation. I still don't understand why a piece ripping Davidson and CoC (if that was his/her intent)was posted here on our site but whatever.

It was posted to all the fan sites in the conference. I think the arrogance of Davidson (my school) fans and CofC fans had started to rankle the Moc fans.

Sounds like he has too much time on his hands to me.
