A neat story about what Winthrop coach Marshall does to build future program and fan base.

Now In understand that Day Care thing we do next week at a terrier game.

This is a great idea. It costs nothing but the effort and the impact is huge, and will last forever. I would hope Wofford would be sending someone up to Winthrop immediately to find out more about how they are doing this.

As the dad of a 6 1/2 year old boy, I know that something like this would be the coolset thing to him. He still talks about his T-Ball team getting to go onto the outfield at a minor league baseball game and play catch and that was a year and a half ago. He'd probably have a stroke if he got to do something like what Winthrop is doing.

If I ever heard of a perfect venue for L'il Ruff, this is it.

What a great concept- this could generate some of the local interest that's been discussed elsewhere on this board.

I think the moral of the story is even Winthrop has to play teams like Limestone.

A quote from the article:

Marshall in nine years has taken Winthrop from a team that couldn't draw neighbors to a house fire to a powerhouse that has won six of eight conference titles and been to six NCAA tournaments. Last year, the players danced in the locker room after winning the Big South title. Little kids danced with them, under the spray of bottled, nonalcoholic, sparkling cider.

I suspect the real moral of the story is to win basketball games and fans will come.

I wonder how many little kids would want to meet the basketball players if they lost more than they won.
