2018-19

We are currently in position to have a successful 2017-18 season. Next year we lose only one player, and we will be loaded with talented upperclassmen. Our main need: an inside-outside scoring and defensive threat who has talent and plays for the team. Those skills are personified in one player: Zion Williamson.

In the first weekend UNCG got off to a great start defending home turf against us. ETSU went to Mercer and pounded them, giving ETSU the first leg up in what promises to be a very good SoCon race. Depending on who is doing the commentary, there are five or six teams capable of winning the championship. Mercer, ETSU, UNCG, Furman, Wofford and possibly Chattanooga could all rise to the top. These are GOOD mid major teams-maybe the best we have ever seen in the SoCon. Having watched live the Wofford/UNCG game, and the ETSU/Mercer game on ESPN3, it is apparent that this is a special season in the Socon. While it is probably a big stretch to speculate that our conference could get more than one team in the tournament, this is the first year it is truly a possibility. Against the other mid majors I would take the chances of some of our programs. It can be a very special year in the SoCon, and possibly the year our conference turns the corner and becomes truly viable on the national scene. When the season is over I would take our top couple of teams against leagues like the CAA and A10 and strongly believe we can win. Is this he year we get more than one invitation? Can our team(s) get past the first round?

I hate to be negative Nancy but:

1) The SoCon will likely always be a one bid league, even if more than one bid is deserved- perception often trumps reality
2) Zion coming here is most likely a pipe dream (though I admit I’ve dreamed about it along with everyone else)..he is a one and done player and those guys typically don’t fit at Wofford, where you are expected to get a degree when you enroll

If you are gonna be one and done, why not be one and done in your home town, with mom's cookin, on a team that you can help become really good. Be a difference maker.

As preposterous as it may sound, we provide Zion a lot of what he needs. He needs a team with good to great outside shooting that will take the pressure off of him. He needs a team that needs him to fill the inside scoring presence. He needs a team with a point guard who looks to feed the ball to the scorers. He needs a team that will let him be himself and not conform to a "system" that will inhibit him. I know it may sound weird, but...

The Mike Young Radio Show starts next Monday at 6. Here is the press release http://woffordterriers.com/news/2018/1/ ... onday.aspx
And here is the link to the radio player http://athletics.wofford.edu/sports/201 ... 55726.aspx

What caught my eye was the ability to play past events, which you can access by clicking on "Play Past Events." I know many of us are busy between 6-7 on Monday, and I look forward to hearing the coach's show at a later time!

After the Saturday game against those who dress as Bellhops, it appears that we have a fantastic freshman class. Keve is coming on strong, and gives us a second inside presence that we desperately need. If he continues to improve he will be a force. The others had a chance this week to break out and show their stuff, and all did very well. I don't think Coach Young will have any reluctance to put any of them in games at any time. It is easy to lick our chops at next year, but we could be quite good by the end of this year.

I think we are a team to be reckoned with right now and we have about as good a chance as anyone from the SoCon to go dancing...if everyone can stay healthy.

I got the chance to watch Zion Williamson play on ESPN last night. He is an excellent team and individual performer, and genuine sensible person. Wofford would be a great fit for his transition from high school into a serious college program, on his way to a career. He would find great teammates and coaching at Wofford, and be appreciated as a serious student and classmate, while still being around family and those who mean the most to him. It is his best move.

Your point is well made, LD. The truth is that with the players we have now Zion would fit perfectly, and they would be a formidable combination. We will be retuning 9 of the 10 who regularly play now, and he would be the perfect 10! With Zion I doubt Wofford would have any trouble scheduling some great games, both home and away, before the conference schedule. Zion, are you monitoring this? Stay in Spartanburg; close enough for your folks to see every home game; have a ball being a normal Wofford student while playing to a full house every home game!

BTW, we already were in the top 25 of the mid majors poll before the Furman game (they were #7). We should move up-perhaps into the top 10 of that poll. ETSU should be near the top until they are beaten by SoCon teams.

Zion has already proved he is one of the top players in the land. That is unanimously acknowledged. He does not need the Coach Ks and Roys of the world to validate that. He needs a school that will take him for who he is and help him grow as a person, give him a great year of college education without treating him like a teen idol, provide a genuine educational opportunity, and assure great coaching and teammates and a chance to compete against a strong schedule before sellout crowds in a world class arena. That school is Wofford College.

Consider me a part of team "believe it when I see it" when it comes to Zion coming to Wofford
