VCU and Coach Young

LSU hired Will Wade away from VCU. We all know that VCU wanted Coach Young when NCState was about lured Coach Smart away.

Does anyone believe VCU will come calling again? I would hate to lose Coach Young because he is a class act, has been so loyal to us and our future looks bright.

But I believe if VCU comes calling with a 1 mill offer he should go. And if he does I will be happy for him.

First, can VCU afford that kind of pay ($1M) ?
Second, will they opt for MY's deliberate style of offense?
Third, does MY want to move to Richmond on the cusp of the JRIS opening?

****News Alert: Rice's Mike Rhoads former Smart assistant expected to be named HC at VCU per news reports.

One of the most prominent deciders in these sort of decisions is a psychological phenomenon known as the availability heuristic.

We think through decisions using the most available information. If you're driving on the interstate and you drive by a very very bad wreck, you'll drive slower subconsciously.

When it comes to basketball (or any sport, really) coaching hires, there's a lot of "what have you done lately." Coaches who are successful over the course of a career are always talked about being hired at a bigger university or better job, but it's the coaches whose success is more available in our mind (i.e the most recent) that get the most buzz and get hired.

Mike Young won three Socon titles and two years ago was in talks to go to CofC before the year, but that didn't materialize. He won another socon title and coached a good game in the tournament and had his name thrown around and then nothing happened. Then the next season he had a .500 year and I don't think we've heard anything since. Notice, Coach Young is still an accomplished coach. Nothing has changed since he won the championships except the recentness of the championships and the presence in the minds of potential new athletic directors

I'm not saying it's impossible he'll go somewhere else, but one of the silver linings about Coach Young is that we do have these streaky good and bad years. The bad years keep him around. If we lose him (and I would give it a 50% probability at this point), it'll be in the aftermath of a great season, not in a season such as the one we had this year.
