Recruiting 2016

Looks like we have an offer for a big guy but he is a bean pole. Needs some meat on his bones. 2016 PF Jay Huff (6-10, 180, 2★) has received an offer from Wofford. See more at http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/wo ... nRbYA.dpuf

Unless we have some kind of direct link, we will virtually always be late on the big guys and have to take a chance. However, we already have a commitment from another 6'10" player (Pegram) and we can't have too many. As they say, you can't coach size, and we really lack in it right now. Lots of seven footers are "projects" who need lots of work on the court, in the weight room and often in the lunchroom. I was fortunate enough to watch virtually every game Tim Duncan played at Wake Forest. Many forget that he was an overlooked afterthought in the recruiting game, and, except for Wake getting into recruiting problems with Maktar Njai may have take a long time to become recognized. He was a very inexperienced 17 year old with only two years of playing organized basketball in the Carribbean when he showed up at Wake Forest. A former Wake player called Coach Dave Odom and told him about Duncan. They had a spot, and the rest is history. For at least 3 of his 4 years at Wake he could have been a lottery draft pick-if not #1. He has been playing in the pros for 18 years and has 5 rings. Enough said. Miracles do happen. We need one.

Huff has drawn several good offers in addition to ours, including ECU. UVa taking a hard look too. He plays in a small private league but his stats are impressive.

At 190 or so, he will need to bulk up wherever he goes.
The VCU transfer at Chatty has been he most impressive post player I have seen in the SoCon this year. Sammy even had a big that was 6'10" who could play. Lots of bigs in this league now who are not just tall.

Based on Huff's recruiting ranking (#46 overall prospect for 2016), I think it would be an incredible pull to get him on campus and thus very unlikely. Right now, we're his best offer but if UVA, Richmond or Davy were to offer, I think he'd commit to them over us pretty easily.

Hopefully the new arena can sway recruits like this guy. And I hope that we will be getting to the point where we can convince guys to choose Wofford over Davidson. I don't like seeing everyone at Wofford have this inferiority complex when it comes to that place. Wofford has a lot to offer both academically and basketball wise going forward, just like Davidson. And one thing about it, I feel we have just as good a chance, if not a better chance, to go dancing this March than Davidson does.
