Start With Stanford

As I type this our guys should be arriving in San Jose for tomorrow night's game with Stanford. I hope they get a chance to look around in Silicon Valley-the new business capital of the world! To be able to play at one of America's premier (maybe THE premier) universities on their opening night is a big deal. Very honestly, to be mentioned in the same article with Stanford is pretty neat. We should be a good test for them, and push them hard. Who knows what may happen if we stay close. It's on TV on lots of channels. This trip across the country and through Chicago is a great learning experience for all; but what a neat experience for the newcomers! Then Iona on National TV; at home; when millions are watching while eating their cereal, or running on the treadmill, or whatever. Later it's at NC State and W Va and then another one on National TV against the #1 rated Duke team. But first, we Start With Stanford.

Stanford IMO is the premier model of successfully combining high academic standards and competitive athletic programming. Better than Duke, Vandy, Northwestern, the Ivys, the service academies, better than us and FU etc. It truly is an honor to play them in any sort much less a revenue/high profile sport like men's bball. Fortunately, we have a strong squad rolling into Palo Alto and should give them quite a game. We have a real chance to win this.
The only downside: tip off is at 12:00 midnight our time. Makes it hard on an old dog like me to stay up and pull for the SHDs.

I have a buddy who is a Washington Huskies grad and big West Coast sports fan. As a result, he has the Pac-12 network (Dish), so I have booked some time in front of his TV tomorrow at midnight.

Sidenote: because of him I have discovered how amazing Shaq Thompson is for the Huskies. Look him up. Great story, great player.

I know we are a veteran team, but I saw where Stanford is ranked 26 in both polls. Realistically, with this being our first game of the season, playing a big time program, at their place, and 3 time zones away, we shouldn't have much of a chance...but SHD's love this kind of situation. Let's show 'em what it means to Conquer & Prevail.

Lots of eyes, chatter, and interest in this game on Twitter. Line was 12.5 earlier but has dropped to 10. Which means Vegas money was moving to us. Interesting.
Tough one to win but what a start if we somehow pull it off.
I can guarantee you this: we ain't skeered.

I saw on a tweet this afternoon that our game is one of the "best 5" opening day games-and was picked as a possible upset. This is a great opportunity in so many ways. Because of the time it will be little watched on the East Coast, but it will be a premier game in the West. Most of those folks will not have heard of Wofford. I hope that they can 1) Pronounce it and 2) Be saying "how did that just happen?" when it is over!

Stanford barely beat Cal Poly Pomona in an exhibition a few nights ago. Stanford has some size, but lost its best post players after last year and is expected to be more of a perimeter team this year.

Their fan board and student newspaper have virtually nothing about this game.

I saw that Stanford beat Cal Poly Pomona by winning in the last minute, so I looked up Cal Poly Pomona, and discovered they are a perennial contender for the D-II national championship, and I think have won it within the past couple of years. Although it was an "exhibition" game, because it was D-II, I think the competition was pretty good. However, I think we have a great opportunity in front of us! I will stay up and watch it!
