Ok, the plot thickens again. P & C is reporting AJ had a 2011 domestic dispute to which he pleaded no contest in Ga. and that is why he withdrew. What a mess!

From the P & C:

Anthony Johnson withdrew his name from consideration for the head basketball coaching position at the College of Charleston Wednesday afternoon after telling school officials that he was involved in a domestic dispute with his then-wife in 2011, The Post and Courier has learned. Johnson was involved in a physical confrontation with his then-wife, Crystal Johnson, on June 10, 2011 at their Atlanta home. The arrest warrant states that Johnson used one hand to push his pregnant wife in the throat. The confrontation took place in front of the couple's son. Johnson was charged with two counts of simple battery, one count of simple battery of a pregnant female and third degree cruelty to a child, the affidavits said. All four counts were misdemeanors. If convicted on all four counts, Johnson faced a prison term of four years and a $4,000 fine. Through a pre-trial agreement, Johnson later pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct, serving 19 days in jail and one month of probation.

Sad, but you would have thought AJ would have mentioned this or that someone at C of C would have figured that out before their search made it this far? #-o #-o #-o

This also does not fully explain MY's withdrawal unless he was told AJ had the job?

I agree that it is highly likely that Coach Young will seek to move on if the right situation presents itself. Hopefully when he moves up it will be in the nromal time frame where Wofford can move on in its own time without stress. I also hope that our athletic administration starts to consider this possibility sooner rather than later so that the most seamless transition possible can be made.

I doubt it, but maybe C of C will call Paul Harrison. He was an assistant there, and I understand that John Kresse gave him a very strong recommendation for his current job.

Apparently, another issue with CofC is that they are still paying their fired coach $400K a year. They are trying to get out of that, but apparently are offering their new coach a lot less than that.

Andrew Miller of the Post and Courrier just tweeted that Earl Grant has been hired as the CoC men's basketball coach.

Way for the hometown media to throw Johnson under the bus. Just say they went in a different direction. No need to bring up the domestic stuff in an article that should be solely about Grant's hiring, especially since they didn't see the need to even mention the other of the two finalists. Bush league journalism.

Good hire for them I think. Local guy with lots of bench experience and great recruiter.

IMO that job went from a first rate "just below the top level" job to one that is not much different from our level. Somewhere along the way they got an opinion that the former coach will have to be paid and that there was not much left in the budget.
