Mike Young

Thought I'd share a little story about MY:

I'm from NJ and came to Wofford to play baseball. Obviously I was pretty nervous going to a small school so far from home and I was even more concerned since I was living off campus. My first day in SC, I drove to the football game late. I had no idea where to park and wound up parking by the only place I knew - outside the baseball locker room. Security guards chased me down and escorted me back to my car. I was unbelievably embarrassed - not a great first step at Wofford. As I was humbly getting walked back to my car, some guy walked by and asked what was going on. "Sorry guys, but he's with me. He's my recruit and I told him to meet me here." They then let me go. This guy had no idea who I was only that I was a ridiculously embarrassed 18 year old kid. The guy was Coach Young. As we walked to the game, I thanked him for helping me out and he asked about my backstory. He jokingly asked if I could shoot the 3. I said not that well and he said - well then let's hope you can hit a baseball. He left me with: "Welcome to Wofford, son. You're going to love it here. Enjoy the Game." Mike Young has had my utmost respect since this day. Great things happen to great people. Couldn't be happier for his and the program's success.

Nice first post, Jersey. Much better than many first ones (probably mine included) on the board. Welcome to the board, and look forward to more posts and contributions here.

When I was in school back in the early 90's, I worked in the athletic department. I worked for the basketball team for part of a year. My job was to wash the practice bags. MY was the assistant. The boys had their washroom in Andrews field house, and the girls was in the BenJo. MY somehow acquired a key to the girls washer room, which, of course, had a much nicer washing machine and drier. One evening when washing the bags, the women's coach busted me and confiscated the key. Next day when I went into the athletic department, MY pulled me into his office. I was expecting a lashing. He kinda laughed it off and told me that having to give up that key was about as bad as turning over the rock.

Jersey Terrier's story about Mike Young makes me have even more respect for the man. We are lucky to have him at Wofford and I hope we can keep him coaching for us for a long time.

I don't have an awesome story like JerseyTerrier, but I got to know Coach Young while I was at Wofford because he always thanked me for coming to all the games. I have always thought a lot of him as a man; he is great guy. Now, after how the team turned itself around from its early struggles and made it to the tourney, I think more of him as a coach than I ever have before. We were much more of an underdog this year than when we won our previous two titles, so I think this year has been Mike's best coaching job ever. I have always known he truly loves Wofford College. I don't think there's anywhere else he wants to be. And I can promise right now that I am never going to say anything negative about him again. He is one of the mid-major's best in my mind without a doubt.

I kept statbooks for both the football and basketball teams while at Wofford and got to know Coach Young fairly well on all the basketball road trips. I was there when the bus caught fire on the way back home from Carson-Newman and a bunch of other behind the scenes stuff. I thought a lot of Coach Young then and even more now. I even took both of my Wofford PE classes from Coach Young (tennis and fitness). Through it all he was always positive and a friend to everyone he dealt with.

Fast forward many years to a road game at Samford in 2010 when I was sitting behind the bench with my kids and with just a couple minutes left before the tip Coach Young walked around the bench, thanked me for coming and spoke with both my kids which made them feel like rock stars.

Wofford is a lot of things to a lot of different people, but I think we can all agree that Coach Young is one of the many things that makes it special to us all.

I am riding down the road today between Houston and Port Aransas Tx, and I have my xm radio on the college sports channel, and then make a phone call using blue tooth, which overrides the satellite radio. When I complete the phone call the blue tooth goes off and the radio comes back on, and after a few seconds I think damn, that guy sounds familiar, then all of a sudden I realize it is Mike Young. He is in the midst of an interview on the Tim Brando show(someone subbing for Tim). Mike is responding to questions about Wofford basketball and how he competes year in and year out for the SoCon championship, and what makes Wofford so competitive. Getting to the NCAA tourney does get us great exposure, and Mike is outstanding representative for us, in much the same way that Mike Ayers has been. We are fortunate in the leadership that we have had at Wofford, in the entire athletic department--

I often have friends or acquaintances compliment to me their various positive experiences at/with Wofford. But I have had several comment to me about their interactions with MY. One in particular occurred when a friend accompanied his son's basketball team to one of our team camps. While a rabid sports fan, my friend is not a basketball guy and felt a little out of place not knowing all the terminology and what he and the team should be doing. MY went out of his way to personally engage him and shepard the team through the camp. It made a HUGE impression on my friend and to this day is a Terrier fan. He was one of the first to call and congratulate me Tuesday. He loves MY and how he does things. And this was 15 years ago.
It's only one guy but this kind of goodwill cannot be bought no matter how much money we could spend.

I have always been a staunch supporter of Mike Young. Even in the years when things weren't, as he put it "all Ice Cream and Rainbows". He is a class act. He genuinely cares about the well being of his players. He goes out of his way to help them on and off the court. I think he enjoys preparing them for life after basketball. If you just look at all the former players that have stayed in the game (Dahlman, Diggs, Rundles, Loesing, Martin) and those that have come back to assist him (Giltner, Johnson, Rundles) it is pretty easy to make the connection. The guys that played for him, respect him and the program they have built. I think it is time to acknowledge that what Mike Young has accomplished in basketball with the basketball program is on par with what Mike Ayers has done with the football program. We are now a respected program that wins Championships (not every year) on a consistent basis. That was what we were seeking six or seven seasons ago when many of the posters on this board were unhappy with the basketball program. Mike has put in the time and effort to build something we can truly be proud of. The recognition his teams have given Wofford cast a very wide net. The future of this basketball program is extremely bright. We have the core of the team returning with some incredible recruits coming on board. Next year will be special. I just hope we can keep Mike Young at Wofford. He does is it the right way.

I had Coach Young for PE two different times as a student. A really nice guy back then. Still is a good person, I believe. I'm sure glad he has found a way to win at Wofford.

I have known MY for many years having had the benefit of playing for he and RJ (briefly), and while I have the utmost respect for Coach Johnson and what he contributed to Wofford Basketball, I always felt that MY was the driving force or the pulse of the program. I think some of the growing pains that he encountered after moving to the HC position, were just that. He now has been able to develop a system that works, recruit for that system and implement it year after year, and as a result, we are seeing the success that can bring. We will have down years here and there like all programs, but overall, I think we are easily in the best long-term shape the program has known.

Mike has worked hard at his craft and has become very good at it. All the while, he has remained the grounded and genuine individual he was from his first day as an assistant.
