Anything going to be done to help the basketball team?

Postby woffordgrad94 on Sun Nov 23, 2008 7:34 pm

I keep hearing about a new athletic building for football complete with a huge weightroom as well as a Jumbotrn for Gibbs Stadium and increased football scholorships. That's all good. But we are already good at football. So what about basketball? This program is in dire need of more scholorships and an upgrade in facilties, as the Ben Johnson arena is small, dated, and reminds me of a high school's gym. No wonder we don't attract a lot of non-conference foes to Wofford. I wish the new athletic facility would include a new and better home court for the basketball Terriers.

Worry about being competitive in the SOCON before worrying about attracting quality non-conference opponents. I think the basketball team has 10 scholarships. How many more do you want?

Nope. Wofford is not fully funded so more basketball scholarships would be awesome.

Back to the original question... the weight room should help every sport. Not just football.

Let's save some basketball resources for now, we might be clamoring for some money to buy out a contract in a few months.

I believe the number of scholarships for the mens team is 12, 1 short of the maximum of 13.

Last year 07-08 (school year), per RJ, we had 11 bb scholarships.

I got my info from RJ as well, but in the 06-07 school year. He said we were one short, so I did the math. I wonder what the difference is?

Don't know, unless we lost someone and were'nt able to find someone else worthy of awarding a scholarship---Seems to me that our biggest needs may be in recruiting budget and assistants salaries---If our bb staff had the kind of longevity that the football staff has it might help in building a program, and if we had the kind of recruiting budget to help us look at more potential Wofford recruits it would help, I think.

Aren't basketball players allowed to use the weight room too? Or is it exclusively for the football team, to the exclusion of other athletes and the student body as a whole?

I think that the whole student body should get access to this weight room, except of course during designated "closed periods" for athletes.

I know its for the whole athletic program---As to whether its open to the student body at large, I would guess not---The Richardson Bldg would serve the rest of the student body--

I think fgs44 hit on the major issues. Having scholarships is a key, of course, but so is having a budget to go out and recruit players.

We may be under-funded in football, too....I don't know the numbers. But, fortunately, we have developed an identity and a niche, it seems to me. There's the story of Ben Widmyer contacting Wofford after seeing us on TV.

Again, I don't know how money compares for basketball recruiting. But my guess is that Davidson puts assistant coaches on airplanes routinely to recruit all over the country -- or all over the globe, in fact. We don't have that luxury, I'm guessing.

This is how I understand it.

I think the basketball team is fairly well funded. Our program would be in a lot better shape right now had it not been for injuries to key players the last several seasons. Our best players go down = more losses = less desirable program to play for. Coach Young has been at the school for close to 20 years so stability is not a huge issue. Assts come and go but you want your head guy to stick around. We are pretty young this year so we could have some growing pains again this year but if we stay healthy we will compete and hopefully build more momentum. Remember this is a team who beat Purdue on the road last year and continues to compete pretty well (exception Clemson this year) with the big guys.

Umm... no. Although I'm always happy to see a positive basketball post, this isn't true. We are near the very bottom of D-1 when it comes to mens basketball budgets.
