After reading the above article in the Herald, as a long-time Wofford
grad and supporter who lives 200 miles from the campus, does
anyone other than a few fans on this forum really care about
Wofford basketball--or baseball?

It's really sad that something like this was written and found it's way onto the internet.

In this case, Valentine's Day was part fo the problem, but that only serves as an excuse this one time. The problem is much larger. Years of bad promotion of our programs has yielded fan apathy, acceptance of excuses, and general mediocrity.

If we keep doing the same things, we are going to continue to get these bad results, both on the court and in the stands. If we keep allowing ourselves to use our size and resources as an excuse we are never going to be anything more than we are today.

As Wofford graduates, we were required to produce better results than these in the classroom; it is nearing the time that we rally together to demand our athletic programs produce the same kinds of results.

I don't begin to know what the root of the problem is but I was
struck by two quotes from opposing players after two of our most
recent games.

An Elon player said, "We just wanted it worse than they did".

A Georgia Southern player said, "This was the deadest crowd I
ever played before".

Fellows, any team can have an off night but a lack of emotion
for two games this critical needs to be addressed. What ever
happened to the pep band we used to have that played "Sweet
Georgia Brown"?

I think the biggest problem is building up a core group of fans. Right now we are relying on a core of what, 2-3,000 people, including students? On a given night (Valentine's Day or not), half of those might have other plans because there are more interesting things to do besides seeing a mediocre team play.

Promotions could help, but would be a short-term fix. Putting a better product on the court is the one sure way to draw more folks. I don't know anyone with a magic pig that they can pull a couple of scholarships and some cash out of its posterior, so we have to assess the current situation as it is and see what we can do better under these conditions while continuing to work on improving said conditions.

Current SoCon Home Attendance Numbers (sorry about the formatting):

Team | HOME GAMES Avg
Davidson | 11-71965 6542
Chattanooga | 15-62845 4190
Coll. of Charleston | 9-28863 3207
Appalachian State | 10-24653 2465
Georgia Southern | 10-24271 2427
Western Carolina | 11-17354 1578
Furman | 10-14109 1411
The Citadel | 14-18447 1318
UNC Greensboro | 9-10893 1210
Wofford | 13-15581 1199
Elon | 11-10280 935

UNCG has better facilities and tends to put a better team on the floor yet they average only 11 more fans a game. It's low majors college basketball. I'm not sure even winning would make much difference but I would love to be proven wrong :)

Belk Arena has a capacity of 5700 per Davidson's web site. There were maybe 3000 fans there for the Wofford game I attended. How do they average 6542 per game?

Davidson had "home games" versus North Carolina and Duke at the Bobcats' arena in Charlotte.

Yeah, forgot about those. Glad you put "home games" in quotes. Davidson fans were in a distinct minority on those nights.

Promotions aren't going to help because Wofford doesn't seem to understand them. Is anyone really going to come out to see if the Domino's Pizza mascot can outrun the Arthur State Bank mascot? I've seen high schools with better game promotions/activities than Wofford (and that goes for football too).

As I've often said, we aren't going to be "big time" if we don't try to look "big time".

Attendence will come with wins and interesting opponents. How will our students be energized by Toccoa Falls and numerous flat performances? Why would our season ticket holders want to come see Wofford play Virginia-Wise when plenty of other entertainment options exist?

OK, answer man, why dont you send some of your ideas to Lenny Mathis? I am sure he would be willing to listen to anyone with some original ideas of how to increase attendance and excitement among all Wofford sports. Let the Wofford Athletic office know how to "look" big time.

I've been to several games at other SoCon venues following the Terriers and I can say that Lenny does a better job during the game than any other promotions guy. My hat is off to him.

A really good band would make a world of difference at BenJo. And it's possible to do it. Would take organization, a good director with flair, and maybe hiring a few musicians from town to bolster Wofford students who would participate.

Or some really cool instrumental foot-stomping rock and roll band. Like Los Straitjackets.

Yeah, I wonder what it would cost for them to be our house band?
