We can still be the South's #2 seed!

Postby woffordgrad94 on Sat Feb 02, 2008 2:47 pm

After the many struggles early in the conference season, we have reason for some optimism that this program may be stating to turn the corner a bit. First off, our young post players all continue to develop nicely, and you can already tell Junior Salters wil be a stud. That makes me bvery optimistic about the future. But let's not forget about this year. With Georgia Southern's recent loss to Chattanooga, we are only 1 game behind the Eagles fo second place! And we've alraedy notched a big road win against the Eagles. If we can beat GSU at home again on Valentine's Day, we'll be in great shape to perhaps take the #2 seed from them and get a first-round bye in the conference tourney for the frst time ever, something I never dreamed was even remotely possible a short time ago. Of course we have to hold serve and win games against weaker conference opponents (like the one vs. Furman today) to have a shot at doing this. And we're going to have to pick up a couple more road victories as well, something that's been a huge challenge or us historically. But I just have a very positive feeling. We seem to be coming together well and we have some confidence. And we will get Shane and Noah back soon to boot. I haven't felt this good about Terrier hoops in a while.

I agree that we seem to be turning a corner right now. Hopefully this trend will continue and we can set ourselves up with an easier tournament pairing. I also hope this trend continues into next season so we start the season at this level instead of having to find our stride in January.

Oh, I had forgotten that the tournry format has changed. All teams are seeded 1-11, with the top 5 seeds getting a bye in the first round. If the season ended right now, we would be the #6 seed and face #11 The Citadel in the first round. I'm hoping that we can get into the top 5 and avoid playing on the first day (4 or 5 would pit us against Davidson in the second round, howver, and I don't necessarily like that, but it will be very hard for us to finish at #3).

If #6 plays #11, then who does the winner of that game play? I like our chances in another matchup against El Cid, and if playing the extra game avoids Davidson a little longer, that might be our best shot.

Eyes,

why would you ever want to play 4 games instead of 3? No SoCon team has EVER won the tournament without having a Bye. just too hard.

I think Furman made it to the finals a few years ago as a low seed, but just ran out of gas in the finals.

Nice win over the Paladins, by the way.

I remember that year. Wofford, led by Ian Chadwich was playing College of Charleston after a huge upset win over Davidson, while Furman was playing App. State in the semis in Greenville. Wofford had a lead in their game, but they also seemed to run out of gas late and wound up losing to C of C. Furman had a similar situation against App, and ultimately, it was two teams that had byes, App. and C of C that met for the championship. I forgot who won it. But the point is born out here that it's very hard to win the tournament without a bye. And if we're going to win it this year, we will most likely have to beat Davidson sooner or later anyway. Why no get them sooner, when we are still somewhat fresh? That might offer us our best opportunity.

Did Chadwick end up playing in Europe?

That was 2000 in Greenville. 94cat was referring to 2002 when Furman beat Western Carolina, Georgia Southern and College of Charleston before losing by five to Davidson in the finals. We actually led by four at halftime, but Peter Anderer hit six threes.

*Edited to say that I'm in full agreement with those who say its is almost imperative to earn a first-round bye in order to win the SoCon tournament.

I agree that winning 4 is much harder, but considering our recent results, I'd just like to win a couple games and build some confidence. Beyond that, anything is gravy for me.

Each conference team has 20 games to build their confidence. No one in their right mind would want to play 4 games instead of 3
