This is a great press conference by William and Jack Nicklaus. In this age of athletes who struggle trying to express themselves, this will make you proud.

I am so excited about this. Just last week I thought to myself that it might be about time for a breakthrough win. Wofford angle aside, this is a huge deal and well deserved. No matter what happens from here this is something that can never be taken away. And this is a "big deal" tournament. Any win is a win, but this is not the John Deere Classic. This is a win over a field that had tons of top players.

Nice remarks by John Curran.

And I understand William is 15th on the Ryder Cup list.

The addition to the field was just a formality. He is ranked #45 in the world, and anyone inside the top 60 on the 13th was in. They saved a group of tee times and he was put into a slot with Jim Herman and Smylie Kaufman in a pretty featured pairing beginning tomorrow afternoon. William has been at Oakmont practicing for 5-6 days and has gotten some TV time. The tournament is being played on probably the hardest US Open course in the US, and this is William's first US Open. He will have to play very well and very smart to first make the cut, and then to get into contention. It will be very interesting to see how he does.

Last week's Sports Illustrated - Muhammad Ali on cover - featured a blurb about William's win (on p.18.)
Under the "Go Figure" column, the Headline $1.53 Million...mentioned that his purse for winning the Memorial outpaced his only other victory of $16,000 (2007 Tar Heel Tour.) Nice picture with trophy, too! =D>

I saw William's win called "the most popular win among the players all year." He's evidently chillin' this week preparing for next week's Bridgestone WGC event-the first (and we hope the first of many) he has made. These are limited field events with no cut that pay a lot of money, so it is a real opportunity to pick up points and money. Then he should be eligible for the British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland. After that, in August, is the PGA in New Jersey. Later in August this year's FedEx Cup Championships (4 events) will begin after the Tour plays at Greensboro. He is currently in the top 20 in FedEx points, and the top 30 at the end of the playoffs get lots of exemptions for majors and WGC events next year. A strong run over the next couple of months will continue to change his life. After the win at The Memorial his whole schedule changed, as he became eligible for the US Open and the rest of the majors. It's a pretty nice problem to encounter...

William shot -6 today and currently has a 3 shot lead on the field. Bogey-free round.

Got to watch and listen to much of his round. The truth is that he got pretty lucky on the second nine. He had some chances he missed even while shooting four under on the front, but he got some real breaks on the back. He had 8 putts on the back side, with a holed bunker shot and two putts that went in from just off the green (don't count as putts). Wow, talk about being on a run!
