First Time Ever

Postby boulder3m on Wed Nov 15, 2017 10:39 pm

I'm going out on a very long limb and guess that this week is a First for Wofford. We have two Wofford grads playing in the same PGA Tour event at Sea Island. William McGirt is a fully exempt player, and Andrew Novak, who led the field at his qualifying site in the second stage of the Web.com Tour qualifying, made the field in Monday qualifying. Andrew will next play in the Finals of the Web.com Tour Qualifying, and will have status on that tour regardless of his finish. The higher the finish the better his chances for getting into events. This week will be a great experience for Andrew, and is just icing on the cake for his great qualifying run. We wish them both success down in Sea Island.

Great catch Boulder, thanks! Excited. http://woffordterriers.com/news/2017/11 ... assic.aspx

Andrew -1 after first day; William -2 after 16. Both have good shot to qualify. https://www.pgatour.com/leaderboard.html

Although Andrew did not make the cut, he played pretty well and came closer than many of the tour players. This was a valuable experience for him and will give him some confidence in that environment, and an appetite for more. Where does he stand regarding getting his card, and playing in tournaments?

Andrew has made it, through qualifying, to the Web.com Tour Qualifying Finals in early December. He WILL have status on what is the AAA Pro Golf Tour. How he performs in the final will establish the priority in which he gets into the tournaments when the season cranks up. Then how he does during the season will establish where he plays in 2019. The top 25 for the year will get full tour cards, and then there will be a way to go through the Web.com Tour Finals and get on tour. Barring a miracle this is the best he could have done one year out of school. He qualified for the Canadian Tour while still in school, and played a series of events up there this last summer. Andrew has the best credentials of any Wofford player coming out of college-including William. However, the Web.com Tour is the way to learn to travel and play week in and week out and and manage yourself during what really is a grueling season. There are a lot of big name golfers who did NOT make it as far as Andrew. It looks glamorous, but it is a grind. Andrew has made a great leap forward.
