Western Carolina - elimination game #1 or 2

Postby walliver on Tue Nov 06, 2018 10:41 am

It's time to move on. We may yet have a chance to extract revenge on Samford and Furman, but we need to win the next two. We can't control what Samford and ETSU do, but at 8-3 we will have a chance to continue playing.

Western Carolina has a productive one man offense and they throw the ball.
They have no defense.
To me, the key to winning is to trade field goals for touchdowns. This means consistent offensive play, avoiding the many incomplete passes we have had on first down this year. We will not shut them out, but the offense needs to grind out the yardage, score touchdowns, and keep Tyrie Adams off the field.

Tyrie Adams is the best player we'll play this year, hands down.

Also this is still a potential Socon championship game for us as well.

It's worth mentioning that we've already passed for 1000 yards this year.

The most we've passed for in a season was in the 1500 range in 2007 and 2008 (in 13 and 12 games). With 2-3 games left, it's possible we come close to that again.

To say a team has no D seems ill-advised. Something similar was said about Samford, and we saw how that worked out. WCU traditionally plays us well at their place and you can be sure they will be primed, including the D. They have some talent throughout, and they will be motivated. We flat must be prepared.

This Western team played us well last year and the game was only decided when Gbeese intercepted in the end zone on the last play. They throw it well and will pick us apart. That shouldn't be a surprise. We will have to figure out how to stop them somehow and then we will have to outscore them. It seems a lot of our folks are assuming an easy victory at the Whee. It ain't gonna happen. This will be won in the mud and blood.

Better than Hodges who has beaten us 4 straight times and thrown for a gazillion yards in the process ? If so, that’s high praise.

I'm not prepared to say that Adams is better than Hodges, but he's easily the second best and there isn't much of a gap. I don't fear Western's defense, but they have been playing a little better and we are quite predictable. I'm more concerned about getting into a shootout with them since we aren't built for that. Even if we jump on them early you can't ever really be up enough on a dynamic offense like theirs and if we get behind then it will be that much harder to catch up. If Wofford wins then they are in good playoff shape regardless of how the SoCon big picture works itself out, but if they lose then they will be done and that would probably be a fair result. The biggest thing here is the team successfully bouncing back from the Samford game and treating the Catamounts with the respect they deserve regardless of their record.

WCU was beating Cid by 14 in the second half until Cid blocked two punts. This will be a tough game and we had better be ready - they and their coaches have every incentive to go all out to win. Our D needs to do its job.

Great defensive play sets up our first TD. Good news is that we seem to be getting after their QB more early in the game. It's 7-3 after they threw a long pass with our defender actually in pretty good position, but let the receiver come back to it. Understandable after last week. Then the stop and a pretty weak looking kick for 3. Our ball and the opportunity to start a long drive taking time off the clock.

Not happy with the weird call, but we never should have let them get there. The lame duck pass was ours to grab. So far our offensive line is not doing a thing. Really looking very weak. Western is not a defensive powerhouse, and yet they have really shut us down. WCU doesn't look to be playing anything but a standard 4-3 defense, and spying the pitch. We don't seem to have anything for them.

The flatness we played with in the first quarter is why I'm not confident we will go far in the playoffs if we make it at all
