Time for Furman Week!

Postby woffordgrad94 on Sun Oct 07, 2018 4:11 am

Time to get ready to strap ‘em up against a team located about 30 miles to the northwest that still disparagingly refers to Wofford College as “little brother”. A number of FU fans still insist their is not a rivalry game (though that number is shrinking). When you look up and see those awful hideously ugly purple jerseys you just want to puke! As a Wofford fan/alum, if you can’t get up for Furman no matter the sport, then you just don’t like Wofford football/athletics! Bottom line, we are never lacking for motivation to win this one.

But I have some concerns. Furman has always defended our offense well throughout the years...about as good as anyone In the SoCon. And they had a bye this weekend so they got an extra week to focus on us. Plus we have to play them in north Greenville at Paladin Stadium...a place we’ve never had a great deal of success. I do not care one bit about Furman’s record right now or the results of their previous games. They have talent and they will be gunning to knock us off. This will not be easy. We will definitely go into the game favored, but I’m not sure how much that means. We must bring our A+ game! We seem to have the type of team that will not be rattled by much so I think we get the job done.

Wofford can win this game or they can lose it. Furman is quite capable and has given us fits over the years. They are rested, have talent and a very good coaching staff so they will be ready. Knocking us off would be a great way for them to create a turning point for their season and I am sure we will get their maximum effort in all phases. The question, as it is every week, is will they get our maximum effort? If the Terriers can play smart, work together and execute, then they should be in this game at the end which is always the goal. The turnover bug that has plagued us this season has to be addressed. This is Coach Conklin's time to make his mark. I am certain that many expected Wofford to take a step back after Coach Ayers retired. That doesn't seem to be the case so far, but this is a clear opportunity to go into their stadium and make a statement.

this could be it's own thread topic, but rewatching the Chattanooga game highlights, I noticed that the chop blocks that were called were kind of BS.

Part of that is because there are new rules in place with cutblocking that really hurts option teams: You can't cut block more than 5 yards down field. At least two of our penalties would have been totally clean last year without the rule change. One of them shouldn't have been a flag at all.

We may as well not even teach our running backs to cut block anymore.

Also, ever since Joe Newman dropped the ball before crossing the goal line against Youngstown in 2016 and being lucky enough that it wasn't reviewed, I'm scared he'll do it again and only dropped the ball 3 yards deep against Chattanooga on his 65 yard run.

This stuff makes me nervous.

Any poll ranking Ivy schools that high can't be taken seriously.

First of all, I agree on ranking the Ivy League and anyone else who isn't going to play in the playoffs.
Next, essentially all cut blocks have been made illegal by the big schools who don't like playing option teams. It was purely done to penalize option teams, and will be a factor against us. You had better believe the opposing coaches will be baiting the officials.
Finally, YT I saw the same thing you did and cringed as you must have. Newman has to be warned again if he hasn't already been. You may be generous saying he was 3 yards deep when he dropped it.
Finally, I hope our new coach doesn't know anything about our record at Furman, and comes out and punches then in their purple mouths. We need to treat them the way that Elon did and never let them up.

I'm in total agreement. Back in my AGS days I was practically burned at the stake for not including Ivy or SWAC teams in my polls (MEAC participated back then). In my mind, if you aren't playing to go to the playoffs then you don't need to be ranked.

Things are much different now. Lots of people don't rank the Ivy's, but now the Ivy's are really good because they have endowments the size of a small county's economy, so scholarships are irrelevant because pretty much every student who gets accepted can go for free if their household income is below a certain level.

As a result, the ivys sign huge recruiting classes of pretty good talent (the financial aid policy is relatively new) so you're seeing lots of improvement in the ivys.

That's why Yale and Mercer is an interesting matchup this weekend. Because it's hard to say how good either is, but if it's close the ivys are at least improved.

Meanwhile, Wofford's endowment is about $300m less than we want it so please donate lol

I will be in attendance too. I hope we have a nice turn-out.

It was after MA's eight or ninth loss at Furman, I don't remember which, that I swore off ever going to a game there again. But JC has inspired my confidence.

Hope your confidence is rewarded OG. We need to be alert and execute consistently and well, and avoid costly miscues. With an extra week to hone in on us, and defending home turf, the Paladins will present a formidable challenge.
