Samford lost to Kennesaw St yesterday, and only has a win over a non-D1 opponent. According to the unwritten rules of having to have 7 D1 wins they can't make the playoffs. That is amazing, in that they were picked by most polls as the team that would win the SoCon. Meanwhile, the team that was universally picked as the next to last team in the league, ETSU, is leading the league. This is wacky. VMI is doing a great job of recovering from our pounding, and is staying in every game to the end. What a gutsy group they are. From all appearances the league doesn't play much defense. Almost every game NOT involving Wofford is an offensive game. Although the Chatty/ETSU was a low scoring affair, I watched it on ESPN and it was much more the ineptness of the teams than the defense that kept the score down. ETSU had a 17-0 lead until Chatty opened up late and made a game of it.

I profess surprise that we beat GW so handily; they traditionally have had some pretty stout players who rise to the occasion against us. 9.3 yards gain/play is an eye-popper. Don't like the two lost fumbles.https://woffordterriers.com/boxscore.as ... ll&id=4246

Furman's close win against WCU may get them on a better course; both FU and WCU will be dangerous opponents for us, especially since both are away games. And we had better gear up our pass D and pressure vs. Chatt.

We have stayed at #6 in the coaches poll and #7 in the FCS/Stats poll. There is no other team from the SoCon in the top 25, although ETSU has the most votes of the teams outside the top 25.

Not SoCon, but Elon beat James Madison at JMU. Huge win in FCS. NDS won after hanging around for about a half.Upsets were in the bottom level of FCS top 25. Our win wasn't gaudy, regardless of the stats. Guess is that we will likely drop a little.

I doubt we'll drop. Chattanooga was ranked last week and ETSU will be ranked if they beat the Citadel next week. Today was a solid win

Who said we wouldn't drop. They always look for reasons to low rate Wofford. As time goes by, even if we keep winning, we aren't playing against teams that are rated. Our RPI stays pretty high, but the league is too balanced with everyone knocking each other off.

check out Todd's quote on FB:

Wofford football up to No. 4 in country today on coaches' rankings and No. 6 on STATS FCS media rankings. ... Terriers also now lead the country in rushing (388.8 yards per game and 7.3 per carry.) They are ninth in total offense and sixth in total defense.

that's good enough for me...but, I don't put much stock in polls at this point. Let's play ball and win...that is the strongest poll of all!

Well, we rank anywhere from 20th down to 4th; that sounds definitive enough! I like that the coaches poll has us the highest. To us the fact that we have exploded on offense while getting stronger on defense is all we need. Averaging almost 400 rushing yards and over 7 yards per carry is outstanding. It would be great if we can maintain that ratio of having 20% of our offense come from passing.
It still is hard to quantify what the stats mean. Have we played teams that are strong or weak defensively? Has our defense stopped good offenses? Only time will tell. We can only play the teams on the schedule in the order prescribed.

Our defense is performing at a higher level than we normally do, even against bad competition.

Our offense is racking up the yards we did when Breteinstein was playing. Our offense is on pace to throw for 1200 yards, the most since Widmyer was playing.

There are a number of other stats that jump out at you too, third down defense being one of them (24% this year to 44% last year).

We are a good football team, and even if there's some regression to the mean, when the dust settles we're gonna have better stats than last year.

We just need to win. Take it one game at a time. That's the only stat that matters.

All we are doing right now is (hopefully) setting ourselves up to win the SoCon outright and earn a seed in the playoffs. If we accomplish that, then we get a week of rest and a home game against a team that we are rated higher than. If we can win that, then we are one of the last eight standing and everyone is good so it is then up to execution. Keep winning and the rest takes care of itself.

Through the mid point of the season we are 4-1 and tied for the conference lead. We have totally dominated in virtually every conference game and run up some gaudy offensive stats while shutting down our opponents on defense. Yet, we have ZERO Southern Conference player of the week awards. No one on offense, defense or special teams.
So, what's the deal? Are we unappreciated, underrated, or overlooked? Man, if that doesn't put a chip on our player's shoulders what will?

Individual rewards are nice but final scores of games is all that really matters...I think all our players would agree.

Article in our paper today touting Elon’s freshmen as big reason for their success this year ... sounds a bit like our freshmen.
