Wofford on TV and internet streaming

Postby woffordgrad94 on Sun Aug 26, 2018 5:00 pm

This info is all according to the football schedule on woffordterriers.com. 5 Wofford games will be televised locally in the Upstate on WYCW-TV 62: The Citadel, VMI, Furman, Mercer, and PC. Two games will be streamed on ESPN3, Mercer and WCU. All other games except Wyoming are streamed on ESPN Plus, which is $3.99 per month (I think a $39.99 yearly rate is also available- it was when I subbed because I got it). The Wyoming game will be streamed on the Mountain West Network (which I think is free).

Just a personal note- I really like ESPN Plus. Of course I am into MLS and a lot of the minor college sports that they show.

94, Do you happen to know if ESPN+ archives programming? Being able to go back and watch our games again was something I always appreciated about ESPN3.

Pretty hard to see our games on ESPN+ as a positive for Wofford or the SoCon. Folks could previously stream conference sports for free if you had an ESPN login. To make folks pay for this on top of what they already pay for cable when it was previously included is pretty lame, especially when the product hasn't changed and may have even gotten worse given the exit of Hauser (reportedly over disagreements about money).

The pivot to ESPN+ is more of an ESPN thing than a socon or wofford thing FWIW. ESPN is bleeding cash

FWIW, I think one can sub to ESPN Plus without a cable subscription...but they just can’t watch any ESPN networks events (including ESPN3).

That is correct. And you can cancel plus whenever you want. Basically, it's the best model for ESPN right now. Lots of people are canceling their cable subscriptions or opting out of ESPN in their packages, so ESPN gets diminishing returns for the amount of content they have. Plus is their solution for consumers like us. In a matter of speaking, everyone's cable bill subsidizes ESPN3/WatchESPN, but only a couple people watch the programming. Plus ends the subsidy.

Well even though I am in New York and the ESPN app can trace my location to NY, I am still being blacked out from watching The Citadel game on ESPN+,which I PAID EXTRA for, because the game is televised in my local area. Never mind that I am not in my local area and they know that. THIS is among the stupidest things I’ve ever seen! Not sure exactly whose fault it is that I am blacked out, but it’s exceedingly stupid that I am. I guess it’s audio only for me.

Would somebody nudge the announcers and let them know they are on air?

No announcers on TV just video with crowd noise going to radio broadcast

Wish there were a podcast of the radio broadcast from beginning to wrap up. Watching the game on replay without announcers is a little different, although admit sometimes the announcers are tedious at best. They sure don't miss a chance to run an ad, though!

In the third quarter, after deleting and reinstalling ESPN and signing out and back in, I was able to get the ESPN Plus game video without a blackout. Man was I disappointed! No announcer! I turned it off and went back to audio. This sucks. I sure hope this was merely first week bugs and it will be better going forward. I really hope this very poor streaming broadcast setup is not a money deal of some sort, either on Wofford’s or ESPN’s end (or both).
