Panthers at Wofford

Postby boulder3m on Mon Jul 23, 2018 11:30 am

It appears inevitable that the Panthers Training Camp will be gone from Wofford at least in a couple of years, given what has already been said by the new owner. If that were to happen, what are the losses and gains for Wofford?

With the loss of the revenue, we seem to gain back land that can be used for other purposes. For example, we don't have track and field facilities and we have to double up on field use for lacrosse, soccer, etc. In addition, we seem to gain land that can be used for parking and perhaps other college functions.
IMO, one of the best things ever done by our Trustees was buying all of the land to the north of Snyder field and on the other side of Evins St. Perhaps we should own anything we can get between our campus and the hospital, as well as bordering us on Church St.

I regret the loss of exposure and fear the loss of revenue, but the ability to reallocate the resources that remain (primarily land and facilities availability) gives Wofford a chance to reimagine itself after 25 years of being home to the Panthers. Perhaps there is some new summer program that can be launched to bring prospective students onto campus in July even if we are unable to continue to bring the community at large on campus. I guess we will figure out how reliant we were on the Panthers money when we have to figure out how to replace it.

I think an aggressive campaign to acquire as much land as possible (even if the College just buys it and rents to the current occupants) is always in order because their will always be needs in the future. Land is always in limited supply and for an institution such as Wofford is a sound investment.

When does out contract end with the Panthers. Didn't we, in the last couple years, extend the contract?

I read an article that said the contract ended in '19. It would be far fetched to think the new owner would extend it. The only reason would seem to be a need to extend the good will of the team into SC. However, a new training facility that has been rumored acroos the state line in Ft Mill would eliminate that. With a base cost of over $2 billion the new owner will be looking for any possible way to generate income opportunities, and our campus just doesn't fit that bill. Just a tour around the ACC or SEC shows some fantastic new indoor and outdoor football facilities, and that seems to be the future. The models for the owners seem to be Minnesota and the new LA arena, with training facilities near the arena integrated into a mega multi-fasceted real estate development.
