Scrimmage notes.
Offensively you could tell it was the first scrimmage. False starts, exchanges, snaps. All things that will get corrected in practice. The play calling although scripted looked like the perfect recipe for Wofford to put up some major stats this season. The identity of this offense will be hard to pinpoint unlike years past. Traditional Wofford Triple option mixed with RPO'S, Power sets, plenty of fomations, motions, shifting, play action, and empty sets. Personnel wise we have some additions to the skilled positions that if they learn the playbook and keep progressing, will be difference makers on Saturday. TJ Luther and VanCleave showed glimpses of raw talent. Luther can flat out take the roof off a defense. He blew by a veteran DB and had to wait for the under thrown pass for a TD. While VanCleave is a mixture of Blake and McAfee with less power of course. Great hands out the backfield and surprisingly for a back of his stature, a shifty but North South running back.
Defensively I think we are going to be pleasantly surprised. Even with only a few days into fall camp, the defensive play calling looked cleaner and a conscience effort was made to be aggressive and dictate to the offense what it could call. Look for opposing offenses to be doing plenty of check offs pre snap. The Defensive coaching staff seems to be more seasoned than last. In game adjustments is where I think we fell off last season, so it's yet to be seen with this staff to have an opinion. With the pedigree of the players and coaches this season I think we can be a top 10 defense nationally. Depth at OLB is still a concern. I wanted to see the 2 incoming freshman but I think they were held out of scrimmage.
